Fauci, NIH director to lead mass vaccination push with DC-area faith leaders

Source: The Hill

The nation's top infectious diseases expert, Anthony Fauci, and Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will be leading a mass vaccination push with faith leaders in the Washington, D.C., area.

The event, which will take place at the Washington National Cathedral, is aimed at boosting trust in the COVID-19 vaccine by faith leaders and encouraging Americans - particularly communities of color - to get vaccinated when the vaccine becomes available.

The event will be held inside the main worship space of the cathedral. After remarks, 25 interfaith clergy will receive their vaccinations.

The clergy in attendance at the event represent houses of worship across D.C., Montgomery County, Md.; Prince George's County, Md.; Arlington County, Va.; and Alexandria, Va.

Data shows that Black and Hispanic people are volunteering to receive the vaccine at half the rate that White people are. Some examples:

As observed in prior weeks, there is a consistent pattern across states of Black and Hispanic people receiving smaller shares of vaccinations compared to their shares of cases and deaths and compared to their shares of the total population. For example, in Arizona, 13% of vaccinations have gone to Hispanic people, while they account for 36% of cases, 31% of deaths, and 32% of the total population in the state. Similarly, in Maryland, Black people have received 17% of vaccinations, while they make up 33% of cases, 35% of deaths, and 30% of the total population in the state.
