GOP governor: Time for 'heavy-handed' COVID-19 restrictions to fall by the 'wayside'

Source: The Hill

Republican Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said on Sunday that it is time for "heavy-handed" coronavirus restrictions and mandates to fall by the "wayside" as his state prepares to lift its mask mandate at the end of March.

On CBS's "Face the Nation," host Margaret Brennan asked Hutchinson why he would decide to lift the mask mandate given the apparent hesitation among many of the people in Arkansas.

"Well, because we need to continue to wear a mask, socially distance until we get the vaccine widely accepted, but you can do that two ways. One is by a mandate, or you can do it by public common sense," Hutchinson said.

"I think the time in this pandemic for heavy-handed restrictions and mandates are going by the wayside so people can make good judgments," he added. "And we expect that to happen even after March 31 if the mask mandate is lifted."

Why has Gov. Asa Hutchinson given the world the benefit of his superior insight regarding former President Trump and his life-long pursuit of molesting people? The only ones he didn't molest are the ones he paid to keep quiet about him.

Meanwhile a large proportion of citizens in red states will be refusing to get vaccinated.
That is not a good combination.

start dining in at restaurants, etc. They should continue carry-out to keep their real worries front-and-center.

Not everyone who reopens now will succeed. Inventory is a huge investment.

but we have mandates for that because some people are stupid or have really bad judgment. And the same is true for those who don't wear masks during a pandemic.

The scientists say that 70%+ of the US population needs to be fully vaccinated before we reach community immunity.

I hate to say this, but lifting mask mandates, not doing social distancing and hand sanitation is going to put our covid cases and hospitalizations back on the rise.

I just don't understand this type of "thinking".

The thinking is that is a political statement showing their support for trump all while trump was getting the shot in secret. He had a chance to take it seriously in the beginning and emphasize how dangerous this was but instead chose to downplay it because he thought would make him look bad at the cost of thousands of lives and no doubt will cost many more .

and see the human cost of their failure to treat the pandemic seriously.

99 people who "make a good judgement" will be infected by the one person who thinks the whole thing is a liberal hoax and who thinks it is funny to cough on everyone.

since they're the ones refusing to follow the guidelines for masks and social distance. Many of them don't want the vaccine either.

Good luck with public common sense.

will help us know where we are - a sliver lining I guess.

Frankly, our success rate on predicting where the pandemic is going has not been very good. I'm really interested in seeing what will happen. There are so many factors.

It will also be interesting to see what people do when there is no legal requirement for masks, and how effective retail businesses will be in trying to enforce mask usage in their stores.

20. US have relatively four times as many Covid-19 deaths than closed Denmark ...

... which have had "heavy-handed" coronavirus restrictions for a full year now - and the same goes for two other Nordic countries, Finland and Norway.

Our neighbor Sweden though did not close down, and has had three times as many deaths than Denmark.
US 0,16 (534.000 deaths of 328.2 m.) S 0,13 (13.146 deaths of 10.2 m.) DK 0,04 (2.390 deaths of 5.8 m.)

I could agree that all the closed shops and schools plus the masking is mostly symbolic, and are just raising the general awareness for the necessary distancing - but it is working anyway .

Next step could be to take all the other causes of death, illness and suffering as seriously as the Covid-19, and not just for our own country!
