Corporate Heavyweights Come Out Against Voting-Restriction Measures by Georgia GOP
Source: Newsweek
Large corporations, including Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines and Aflac, came out to stand up against voting restrictions measures by Georgia's Republican Party.
"Voting is a foundational right in America, and we will continue to work to advance voting rights and access in Georgia and across the country," Coca-Cola said in a statement reported by CNBC Sunday. "We support efforts by the Metro Atlanta Chamber and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce to help facilitate a balanced approach to the election bills that have been introduced in the Georgia Legislature this session."
"The ultimate goal should be fair, secure elections where access to voting is broad-based and inclusive," Coca-Cola's statement continued.
Aflac shared Coca-Cola's sentiments, saying "the right to vote in national, state and local elections is the cornerstone of democracy."

(29,294 posts)We can certainly use some corporate muscle behind this issue, even if it has only now become expedient for them.

(13,079 posts)The majority of the public support democracy, and the right to vote to keep democracy. So these companies want to appear they lend their support to ensure the public endorses their products. Quid pro quo.
They also know that it is a free democracy where their entities will survive & thrive. In a fascist state the goverment will turn on them.

(5,195 posts)Shows a level of prescience that I did not think they would be willing to access. You are correct in that this is solely about money. It is also about P.R.. My first thought upon reading this was that one or more of them must either be in trouble, or are flirting with it, and need some public goodwill. But who knows... maybe a few of these big ass corporations are finally figuring out that they have nothing if they won't support the working population? BBWWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! (I knew I could not say that with a straight face.)

But now we seem to have "The Liberal Ideal in the Corporate State".
Most days I still think the world is turned on its head. Like the stock market.

"The ultimate goal should be fair, secure elections where access to voting is broad-based and inclusive," Coca-Cola's statement continued. No Coca-Cola! The "ultiimate" goal should be to destroy that current fucking bill!
Maybe I'll buy a Coke if you come out and "unequivocally", and with no "wiggle-room" say that the current bill must be pulled, set on fire, and NEVER submitted again.
Defending Democracy and fighting racist Jim Crow Laws is NOT wishy-washy.

(24,358 posts)"secure" elections is code for making it difficult for some people to register, not have their registration purged and to vote. Was the last election in Georgia not "secure"?

(39,393 posts)This is the problem with building the whole edifice around minority rule, kids. Corporations want to sell to everybody with a pulse, and if dead people want to purchase their goods and services, thats fine too. Keep messing with their business, fools. Well be there to remind them what the costs are.

Don't recall any chamber of commerce supportive of Democrats.

(15,382 posts)they have the difficult task of continuing to pump dark money to help fascists get elected to secure their tax breaks and ensure they can pay their workers shit wages, while still convincing us progues that we need to purchase products from companies that support politicians that want to kill us.
Judging from Cokes statement, I don't think they've yet found the balance between supporting Nazis while ensuring non-Nazis buy their products.
But don't worry, their PR Department is working overtime on it.

(86,915 posts)On Friday, I think, and made that demand. Looks like they got the message.
This is a tactic that needs to be employed regularly. Corporations need to be on notice that we've had it and are taking our country back so if they want to continue to do business here, they will recognize our demands.

(80 posts)Now let's hear from Home Depot. I know Home Depot owner is a huge Trump supporter, but if this company doesn't come out against these new racist Jim Crow voting restrictions, I'm never going to shop there again. Also, Chamber of Commerce must come out against these laws. C of C has announced that they are again supporting financially, the GOP elected that voted to overturn our election after saying two months ago that they wouldn't give them money. I will not shop at any business that is a member of Chamber of Commerce again until they stop supporting the traitors.

(12,165 posts)We are ruled by rural counties, even though Georgia's blue areas are the economic engines and cultural leaders in the state.
The state is blue on a national-politics level. I think the only solution to fix state government will be a national voting rights act that reins in years of gerrymandering citizens out of proper representation.
