Gavin Newsom: California governor launches campaign to stop recall effort against him

Source: CNN

California Gov. Gavin Newsom launched a new campaign Monday denouncing a recall effort against him and blasting the calls for his ouster as a Republican-backed movement supported by "anti-vaxxers, Q-Anon conspiracy theorists and anti-immigrant Trump supporters."

A new website launched by Newsom, a Democrat, to combat the recall effort seeks donations and support and is accompanied by a 30-second ad that calls the effort a "power grab." The spot blames "violent White supremacists like the Proud Boys, who attacked our nation's Capitol on January 6" for the push that threatens Newsom's political future.

The effort to recall Newsom began last year, fueled by anger over the restrictions he had put in place to curb the spread of coronavirus in California, but it gained steam as prominent state Republicans threw their weight behind both the organizing and fundraising efforts. Recall proponents have gained momentum in recent weeks, with leaders of the campaign gathering more than a million signatures last month.

Nearly 1.5 million verified signatures are required to put the question of recalling Newsom on the ballot, and Wednesday marks the deadline for turning in the necessary signatures. As of Monday, all indications pointed to Newsom's opponents reaching that goal.

Our future bench is being attacked.

Plus who doesn’t make mistakes in a situation like he was faced with? That’s a lot of responsibility and he did the best you could I don’t know who could’ve done better

They're so f*cking stupid.
They were demonstrating in my town, moaning about schools being closed, so I went up and said "Teachers LOVE Newsom!" DAMN RIGHT they said. "Teachers are basically Communists trying to recruit kids into the gay lifestyle!" DAMN RIGHT they said.
"Them why the f*ck are you trying to put kids back into their clutches???"

*CRICKETS*....

We got saddled with Arnold, so, yeah... I think they’re hoping there’s enough chaos and enough names on the ballot hoping to replace him that a Repug could slip through.

7. I can't see it happening this time. Arnold was a still-viable movie star then. Don't think

But not letting my guard down on this. California is doing incredibly well under Dem leadership and they can’t stand that fact. I am a Californian, and will be doing what I can to make sure we don’t let them screw us over again.

14. Arnold was already popular and probably one of the reasons the recall passed

Arnold's problem was always that he was unlikely to win a republican primary in a regular election .

But with how the recall elections worked he didn't have to worry about that.

Lots of Democrats supported him becsuse they thought it would be cool to have the Terminator for governor. And we saw how that worked out.

This time there is no candidate that stands out in either party that could get people to support a recall.

15. In CA, a recall election has two questions.

The first question is yes/no: should the gov be recalled? If No, he stays in office. If Yes:

Second question: who should replace the gov? The candidate with the most votes wins and serves out the remainder of the term.

No D has stepped forward to be an alternative candidate to Newsom. I do not think Newsom’s name appears among candidates to replace him, so at least one D need to be an option or the election will go to an R.

Of course, there are millions more Ds in CA than Rs. One would think he will not be recalled on the yes/no question.

The sad fact is that there is always a pile of RW $ available in CA to fund the wackiest candidates/propositions/etc the RW nut jobs can imagine. This recall bullshit is typical of what the sane people have to put up with out here.

On the whole he has done a pretty good job managing a huge state. Almost 40 million people, 58 really different counties etc. A crisis with no real playbook on what to do...

The 1.5 sigs needed to have a recall is a really low number in a state that big. Thats a little less that 25% of the "people" who voted for the former guy in California in 2020; who as we all know, lost the state by a huge majority.

California is about to (first week of April) start to get a huge amount of vaccines and will quickly get them in peoples arms. Newsom says California right now can do 4 million doses per week if they had them. They are about to get close to that and then, even with so many people, it will be really different by May.

Yesterdays anti-recall start is only the beginning. He will fight these people who are in a definite minority with vim and vigor.

Its gonna be their bad timing that vaccinations will be rocking and hopefully the economics of that fact will help the state at the same time...
