(Reuters) - Michigan state prosecutors have charged a 21-year-old man with threatening to kill President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, all Democrats, saying he claimed to “be the catalyst” for an American revolution, officials said on Tuesday.

Whitmer previously had been the target of right-wing militia extremists who plotted to kidnap her ahead of last November’s election, according to U.S. prosecutors.

The new and separate charges come as U.S. law enforcement officials including FBI Director Christopher Wray have warned of the growing threat of homegrown violent extremism in the United States.

The office of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Monday charged Joshua Docter, 21, of Holland, Michigan, with threatening terrorism and using a computer to commit a crime. Each count carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — A Holland man has been charged with two felonies after allegedly threatening to kill President Joe Biden, U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in online posts.

Joshua Docter, 21, turned himself in Tuesday and was formally charged with one count of false report or threat of terrorism one count of using a computer commit a crime, both 20-year felonies.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office says Docter posted the threats on the social media site iFunny in January, allegedly saying he would shoot and kill Biden, Pelosi and Whitmer in effort to prompt a revolution. A Tuesday release from the office added that Docter had instructions to build a bomb on his cellphone.

The AG’s Office said the investigation started with the FBI and was ultimately passed along to Michigan State Police.

In a statement released to News 8 Tuesday, Docter’s parents Bret and Erin Docter said they were “shocked” by the charges he faces and that they are working with attorneys.
