Senate Approves Biden's CIA Director Pick
Source: Wall Street Journal
WASHINGTONThe Senate confirmed President Bidens choice to lead the Central Intelligence Agency, veteran diplomat William J. Burns, on a voice vote after a Republican senator lifted a hold on the nomination that had forced a two-week delay.
Mr. Burns, who held top State Department posts and led secret diplomacy with Iran and Libya, is set to take over the spy agency as it moves from a two-decade focus on terrorism to grapple with an assertive China, as well as new threats such as pandemics and climate change.
At his Senate confirmation hearing late last month, Mr. Burns, 64 years old, said he would intensify the CIAs focus on China, calling Beijings actions the biggest political test for the United States.
The former deputy secretary of state won unanimous approval from the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this month. Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) then blocked the nomination from consideration in the full Senate, demanding that the Biden administration take tougher action against companies involved in building the Russia-backed Nord Stream 2 natural-gas pipeline.
