Volcano erupts near Iceland's capital

Source: Reuters

The eruption occurred near Fagradalsfjall, a mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula, around 30 km (19 miles) southwest of the capital.

Some four hours after the initial eruption at 2045 GMT - the first on the peninsula since the 12th century - lava covered about one square kilometer or nearly 200 football fields.

“I can see the glowing red sky from my window,” said Rannveig Gudmundsdottir, resident in the town of Grindavik, only 8 km (5 miles) from the eruption.

“Everyone here is getting into their cars to drive up there,” she said.

Not an explosive eruption, just a crack splitting open and gushing lava, sorry doomers

Full IMO video here

Video over at the Science group shows a huge line of cars full of idiots trying to drive over for a closer look. Given the fountins and spatter along the part that has opened up, not a good idea. I'm glad the US isn't the only place with idiots.

I unfortunately signed up for DishTV, a mistake I will soon rectify. There are several religious channels and I see Jim Bakker has a show. First of all, why does any cable TV company give a convicted grifter like Bakker an outlet? But I thought I would check his show for a laugh the other day and I was simply flabbergasted. They were citing all the tectonic and volcanic activity around the globe as a sure sign it's the end of the world. I thought it was interesting that they're not telling people to run for their bunkers right now, because that would not allow them to have time to write more checks. But everything is presented as, "The end is coming soon, not right now, but soon. Send us money. Buy our grossly overpriced survival rations."

I can't believe this type of fraud is allowed to exist. Just one of many reasons I will be cancelling DishTV and paying the early termination fee to do so.

Reading about it in Life mag shortly after it occurred. I was just a child then, but it fascinated me and I dreamed of being abord the Calypso going for a dive nearby.
