S. Carolina senator suggests everyone be made militia member

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) A South Carolina senator has a proposal to make sure no federal law can ever seize guns make everyone over 17 who can legally own a gun a member of a militia.
South Carolina's constitution allows the governor to call up an unorganized militia" of any able bodied male citizens between ages 18 and 45. State Sen. Tom Corbin's proposal would automatically expand membership to everyone who is over 17 and could own a gun.
Supporters of the bill said if everyone is a member of a militia, then they all fall under the opening clause of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that starts A well regulated Militia." That way a federal law restricting weapons would not apply in South Carolina since almost all residents would be in the unorganized militia.

Does everyone in this stupid country fully understand what the word "Militia" means and why the second amendment should be removed from the Constitution ...........

(120 posts)A local business owner, successful, has a frequently seen fleet of service trucks, was off for a weekend of dress-up and war games ended up with a rifle bullet in his neck instead of a hickey from a paintball. The guy with the rifle, a LEO, now former, didnt turn in the rifle after the morning target range play-time. The local is still alive and still has the souvenir from the weekend, totally paralyzed. Probably had this grand vision of the well regulated militia.

(2,385 posts)My recent reading would indicate that the 2nd Amendment was, at least in part, a sop to Southern states to insure whites could have guns to control the black population-
"WHITE TRASH, THE 400-YEAR UNTOLD HISTORY OF CLASS IN AMERICA," Nancy Isenberg.
I could be wrong....
That was a great book. It proved that the tories of the South exhibited their European forebears' racism along with classism.
No, you're not wrong. Remember how it showed that the Irish were set up to be the first "rangers" in the west to clear land for settlers? It was just one example of how racist/classist leaders organized more than one nexus of race and class by pitting a white "immigrant" class against another race. Then later, of course, the KKK and now the christo-fascist neonazi trumpcult.

A South Carolina senator who is known for making outlandishly sexist comments won in his Republican primary election Tuesday.
Tom Corbin, a Republican from Travelers Rest, S.C, won the primary for South Carolina District Five, which covers parts of Greenville and Spartanburg counties in the Upstate.
. . .
Also on Corbins resume while serving the people of Spartanburg and Greenville counties:
He voted against removing the Confederate flag at the statehouse in 2015. When discussing abortion, he said a woman always has a right to choose at the time of conception? (WHAT?!?!) When speaking on Common Core education, he reportedly once told the only female senator (Shealy) to leave the room, before he made his comment. She didnt, and then he went on to tell a story about a public school teacher and gay man juice.
Not only is Corbin notorious for his outrageous remarks, hes also known for stealing his colleagues Chick-fil-A sandwiches.

(10,279 posts)labor militias, that will also serve as "last resort" combat militias for the case in which our regular combat army is defeated in a war.
As labor militias, they would clean up battlefields, rehabilitate military training grounds, clean up large burned forest lands, etc.
The labor militias, in my model, would wear attractive pink uniforms and purple boots.

(33,643 posts)I.E. well before the freaking bullshit that was Heller, in the 21st Century.
Federal Courts (perhaps SCOTUS, not positive offhand) have already said ... ummm ... no.
To even propose this pretty much shows the world that you're an idiot with no knowledge of US history and jurisprudence.

(3,495 posts)Guns over voting. Got it.
Given the state in question, I wouldn't be surprised if they put something in there to prevent the sale of bullets to certain groups of (undesirable) people. You know like before the Civil Rights act and the voter drives in the early 1960s how certain segments didn't bother registering to vote for fear of hooded figures showing up at all hours of the night.

(7,897 posts)the term have been argued in other venues. The Purpose and Requirement to belong would both be challenged and likely overturned since South Carolina is under no existential threat which such a militia would be required to answer. Nor is it likely to be so, what with the establishment of the US Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force for exactly that purpose...And then there is the question of what exactly is the SC National Guard configured to do.
I believe the state also lacks the authority to declare US citizens to be so conscripted against their will. In another case of inflated EGO gets the better of legal due process Imperial Idiocracy strikes again.

(151 posts)Heres a suggestion, if we want to pass effective gun control laws we simply start giving guns away to citizens of color, immigrants, females and Muslims. The Right Wing gun nuts would fall all over themselves writing legislation forbidding it.

(15,369 posts)that the National Guard was basically the equivalent of a well-regulated militia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_National_Guard
From the link:
Local militias were formed from the earliest English colonization of the Americas in 1607. The first colony-wide militia was formed by Massachusetts in 1636 by merging small older local units, and several National Guard units can be traced back to this militia. The various colonial militias became state militias when the United States became independent. The title "National Guard" was used in 1824 by some New York State militia units, named after the French National Guard in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette. "National Guard" became a standard nationwide militia title in 1903, and specifically indicated reserve forces under mixed state and federal control since 1933.
