Steyer polls the Newsom recall -- offering himself as an alternative

Source: Politico

Tom Steyer is polling the California recall.

And the billionaire environmental activist and erstwhile presidential hopeful has included his own name among the list of possible contenders to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom, according to three people familiar with the recent survey.

A Steyer entity commissioned the wide-ranging poll on a number of issues impacting the state’s political landscape. Among them was the Covid pandemic, the environment, and other topics close to him. But his group also notably asked Californians whether they were prepared to oust Newsom from office a year before his first term is set to expire. And, the survey included a handful of fallback options for Democrats should Newsom lose enough support to get booted out of office, including Steyer himself.

The poll comes as 58 county registrars in California now work to verify whether the recall of Newsom has the 1.5 million valid voter signatures needed to qualify for a fall recall election. While Steyer opposes the recall, saying in a statement that it was “a clear attempt by the GOP to take back control of the state and squelch the progressive momentum,” he has been relatively quiet on the push. He has not tweeted about the recall and only once this year mentioned Newsom in a tweet: a thread tied to the governor’s State of the State address.

When folks were gathering signatures, they were typically maskless, waving Trump flags and insisting that COVID was a hoax:

The only reason the GOP are trying to recall my gov, Gavin Newsom is due to him being a Democrat. Not to worry, he won't be recalled. Also note the GOP is trying to get Cuomo out also. GOP can't win elections so the create false narratives about good governors in effort to control large Blue states.

He ran for governor — you did not. We elected him, not you. One of the reasons we ended up with Schwarzenegger (R) last time around is because a bajillion Dems & similar crowded on to the ballot during Gray Davis’ (D) recall election.

The only way the Repubs can win any more is by cheating, and if ginning up a recall on trumped up charges isn’t cheating, what is? .... Oh, I know, ginning up sexual harassment charges against a Dem governor on the opposite coast.

There's nothing seriously wrong with us.
We didn't sponsor the Newsom recall.
We didn't start the Cuomo allegations.

We can't take criticism from the GOP; we can't handle 'both sides do it' very well, we're afraid of our human imperfections that don't even reach the level of misdemeanor.

We don't have a clear conscience because we're not perfect. We are our own worst enemy.

On the day-to-day, what's wrong isn't all that serious until it builds up to influence whether or not we can take the "bold" steps (lookin' at you, Schumer) like ending the filibuster to get S1 and gun background bills passed.

The imperfections and mistakes build up to self-doubt.

The country don't care about all that. They don't care about Senate rules. They want us to do more for them and not fall for Joe Lucy-football Manchins.

I read and hear bull shit on the radio.
Today, some idiot was saying he's charging Newsom for having to drive 3 hours to get a vaccine.
They actually played this on a news radio station (1070 AM Los Angeles)—followed by the dumbass newscasters smirkingly agreeing with it.

When that kind of thing happens, the media being paid off as a tool for the right wing, it's ugly and it's going to have a bad outcome for the voters.

Next up will be lies about Newsom's infidelity. I've already seen some here on DU starting that dirt.

I just remind my neighbors what will happen to us if a freaking Republican takes the Gov' seat. We have a very unique little village all low income seniors, we would never have if under a Republican Governor. I remind them of what happened when the bogus recall on Gray Davis happened. Republican rule for the following decade.

we've gotta support Newsom with everything we've got. He's made a couple missteps, who the hell hasn't. This is a bullshit republican power play, elections are next year for chrissakes.
