Kamala Harris Demands Action for Gun Control: ‘Time for Congress to Act and Stop With the False Choices’

By Ken MeyerMar 24th, 2021, 9:08 am

Vice President Kamala Harris stressed the need for Congress to act against gun violence in the aftermath of the Atlanta and Boulder shootings.

Harris gave an interview to CBS on Wednesday morning as the Biden administration calls for increased gun reform and even considering executive actions to make it happen. Gayle King started things off with Harris by pointing out “the reality is you guys just don’t have the votes, so what’s your move?”

Harris responded by speaking to the tragedy of the double shootings, then by saying it’s time for Congress to act against gun violence as it should’ve done after the Sandy Hook massacre.

“It is time for Congress to act and stop with the false choices,” Harris said. “This is not about getting rid of the 2nd Amendment, it’s simply about saying we need reasonable gun safety laws. There is no reason why we have assault weapons on the streets of a civil society.”

is that they had to keep large numbers of troops in their own states to protect against slave revolts. Those troops were not available for fighting at critical times in the war.

Many of the lovely homes in downtown Charleston were surrounded by walls which had sharp objects along the tops, metal blades, broken glass, etc. Not because they valued privacy while they sipped mint juleps in the back yard, but because of the the numerous earlier revolts they had experienced.

Granted, Canada is not the US, but our cultures and societies are the closest analogs of each other that they could be, I think.

Canada hasn't had zero mass shootings in its history, but our total of 21 is considerably fewer, to say the least. Especially when you consider that 11 of them happened between the 17th and 19th Centuries, before Canada was even a country.

I really don't know where our histories diverged so.

It's not "assault weapons" that are so deadly, it's the bullets they fire. The muzzle velocity (speed of the bullet leaving the gun barrel) is so high that they do devastating (lethal) damage, much worse than a typical handgun which fires a much slower bullet.

Legislation can be crafted that imposes restrictions on ammunition which limit muzzle velocity of semi-automatic rifles (including assault weapons). Single shot (bolt action) hunting rifles could potentially still use high velocity ammunition, those weapons aren't used in mass shootings.

If we can't get a ban on certain guns (not likely I'm afraid) I hope we look at regulations on ammunition which would make the guns much less lethal & also stand a much better chance of being found constitutional, since they don't interfere in any way with a person's 2A right to own a gun, it just limits the type of ammo the gun can fire.
