Newsom won't pick Schiff as California AG
Source: Politico
Schiff was angling for the job with the blessing of powerful Democrats in Washington, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. A Harvard Law School graduate and former prosecutor who serves as the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Schiff had aggressively lobbied Newsom to appoint him to the role, which in the past has been a stepping stone for the governorship or U.S. Senate.
Schiffs office declined to comment.
Newsom, who is facing the threat of a recall over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, has spent months mostly keeping his own counsel on filling the AG job. Hes run much of his own reviews of potential candidates and kept the fierce outside lobbying at bay, according to aides and advisers to the governor and top contenders.

(24,281 posts)(and trust me, if she has a pulse, she will) he would be a good one to primary her.
Time to pass the torch, Senator. Schiff would be excellent.

(64,995 posts)That surprises me.
He's awfully powerful & influential where he is.
I would not have guessed he actually wanted that job.
I guess he'd be closer to home an awful lot of the time.
Still,...

Kamala Harris (2011-2017): US Senator 2017-2021 then Vice President 2021-
Jerry Brown (2007-2011): California Governor 2011-2018
The past 3 attorney generals have all gone on to higher office.
Before that, not as reliable, but still:
George Deukmejian's stint (1979-1983) was followed by two terms as Governor.
Pat Brown's stint (1951-1959) was also followed by two terms as Governor.
Earl Warren's stint (1939-1943) was followed by 10 years as Governor and then as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Being California Attorney General has been a big deal, especially lately.

(64,995 posts)Not being foprom California, I didn't know that, although I recognize the names. But, not as AG.
If he wants to be governor, that makes sense.
But, I think he may be on track for Speaker when Pelosi decides to retire.
That's a pretty big promotion, too!

(33,643 posts)As I'm sure most people around my age or older from California already know. He was Governor of CA when I first became aware of what the term meant, around 6 y.o. it was.
While Gov he dated a famous female singer, I forget which ... Ronstadt, Reddy, Carly, or someone like that.

(49,376 posts)but, Early's campaign posters were strategically placed throughout the district. The GOP nutcase seemed to come out of nowhere with tons of funding.
Early has name recognition now and could be a real threat to flip the congresional district if he challenges a lesser known Dem opponent.
