SACRAMENTO Gov. Gavin Newsom nominated Rob Bonta, a progressive state Assembly member from the East Bay, to be Californias next attorney general Wednesday.
Bonta has been a leader in the Legislatures efforts to overhaul the criminal justice system during his four terms at the Capitol. The Alameda Democrat could bring a new focus to the role of the states top law enforcement official, which has become increasingly enmeshed in the debate over how to address racial bias in policing practices.
A law that Bonta helped carry through the Legislature last year requires the attorney general to investigate any incident in which a law enforcement officer kills an unarmed civilian. He has also pursued measures to ban private prisons and immigration detention centers, to clear old marijuana-related convictions and to abolish cash bail, a move that California voters overturned last fall.
Rob represents what makes California great our desire to take on righteous fights and reverse systematic injustices, Newsom said in a statement. Growing up with parents steeped in social justice movements, Rob has become a national leader in the fight to repair our justice system and defend the rights of every Californian.

(17,390 posts)His work was key in improving voter access in California even in the midst of a pandemic. At a time that Republicans are pass laws designed to suppress the vote, choosing Bonta is an excellent choice. On top of that, Bonta is the second API AG in California (after Kamala Harris), which is also timely given the rise in anti-Asian hate and violence.
