Georgia representative arrested after governor signs elections bill
Source: AJC
Georgia state troopers arrested state Rep. Park Cannon on Thursday as she knocked on Gov. Brian Kemps door, interrupting his livestreamed announcement that he had signed an elections bill into law.
The officers forcibly removed Cannon, a Democrat from Atlanta, dragging her through the Capitol and pushing her into a police car.
Cannon was with several other protesters when she knocked on Kemps office door, saying the public should be allowed to witness the announcement of the bill signing. The sweeping legislation requires ID for absentee ballots, limits drop boxes and changes early voting hours.
Tamara Stevens, who was with Cannon, said she wasnt being disrespectful or causing a disturbance.
She knew he was signing a bill that would affect all Georgians why would he hide behind closed doors? This isnt a monarchy, Stevens said .You have a women of color fighting for the rights of Georgians and they arrested her for knocking on the door because she wanted to witness our governor sign the bill.......................................

(33,643 posts)I completely disagree with what they did (and this f***ed up bill obviously) but they're not taking her to a labor camp here.
They didn't massacre the protesters.
I'm sure she'll be out very soon if she's not already and she won't be (physically) harmed.
Just saying ... this really doesn't reach Nazi proportions.
It might someday, don't get me wrong.

(12,533 posts)You simply write down your DL or State ID number inside your ballot where you sign.

(33,643 posts)And believe me, that license or ID better not have expired or somehow, you're no longer 'you' just because some arbitrary date has passed.

(3,051 posts)Is to prevent massive organized Republican efforts that are starting, which is highly ironic bc they put this in place to stop imaginary Democrat ballot harvesting.
They will get caught by their own antifraud laws.

(12,533 posts)And if you have NO ID, how are you going to the pharmacy, doctor, bank, etc? All of them are getting more strict about requiring identification.
When you register to vote, you can get a State ID for free. If you no longer drive, you can get a free ID over the internet or have someone do it for you. We did that for my mom.
Today, there really is no excuse for not having an ID.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)So I guess spoke out of turn. Not every state works the same and so many are trying to pass so many new laws making it harder so I was speaking in general.
You get carded at the doctor? I don't. And my pharmacy, for non-controlled substances just asks my address and dob. And I never go into the bank I use ATM's and the internet to bank. A person can get by without an ID if they really need to but you're right if in your state it's free to get a State ID you should def. have one.

(12,533 posts)I'm even happier being able to say "i told you so" to a few folks now that trump has started his massive con & money grab
Its always curious to me why people make a big deal out of verifying you are who you say you are. Most every other Western country requires an ID to vote.
Its not a big deal. Everyone has an ID. if you dont, its easy to get one. For free.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)And not always free.
People are remembering nasty stories from years past of red states making some f'd up ID requirements.
In the specific states where the ID required is free and easy to get, yes, I agree with you.
The reason it's not really needed though is that your identity as to you being the person who registered is done via signature matching already. No it's not perfect, but neither is the person writing their ID number.
Think about this ... realistically the only people who could really commit 'voter fraud' are people for whom a close relative died, and they maintain that persons house and get their mail. That person could then, in theory, know how to forge the relative's signature from documents they find in the house or whatnot. But there's a very good chance that person also knows their relatives ID number.
Part of this is just the principle ... the system 'works' without an ID in all but the rarest of cases, and it's already a felony to lie and cast someone else's ballot, and people really just don't do it with any regularity whatsoever. Who wants to go to jail to cast one or at most two extra votes (mom and dad, maybe)?
That's the part that's freaking annoying. Sure for the vast majority of folks, no big. But it's still unnecessary.

(33,643 posts)I understand you can't be sure there's been 0 fraud, but why not say something like 'there's been only 2 charges upheld that were brought against voters for misconduct in Georgia in the past 10 years' or whatever the number is, it's not very big.
Why say 'no widespread fraud'?
I really don't get it.

(205,237 posts)This past election was investigated and litigated unlike any before and nothing was found. But the Republicans (Trump) have behaved as if there were major problems. So I agree that we have to do better in correcting that bogus impression.
