Mitt Romney receives John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award

Source: NBC News

The senator from Utah received the award for his vote to convict former President Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial "and his consistent and courageous defense of democracy."

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney is the recipient of this year's John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his vote to convict former President Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial "and his consistent and courageous defense of democracy."

"He was willing to risk his career and his popularity within his own party to do what's right for our country and to follow his conscience and Constitution and his impeachment votes," former Ambassador Caroline Kennedy told NBC News chief White House correspondent Peter Alexander on Friday in an exclusive interview on the "TODAY" show.

"I think his courage is an example for all of us," she said, adding that Romney's decision reflected the lawmakers from her father's book, for which the award is named.

Romney of Utah is the first senator in U.S. history to vote to convict a president in his own party. Trump was acquitted of allegations that he had solicited foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election.

Romney was the only U.S. Senator in American history to vote to convict a president from his own political party at a Senate impeachment trial. It's an award for political courage, for whatever that is worth. In that narrow context I can see why they gave it to him. It's recognition for a political act, not an endorsement for President.

There may have been Senators with those kind of scruples back in the day, but they never crossed party lines.

What better way to put that threat to bed than by publicly honouring him with a Democratic President named award....for voting against Trump and the rest of the QOP? Don't think for a second that any primary contenders wouldn't use that against him.

Yes, Mitt’s an asshole in a lot of ways but his impeachment vote did take courage. The guy was harassed at airports and could have even been killed on January 6th if that deranged mob had gotten their hands on him and he still voted to do the right thing. He at least deserves recognition for that.

Quite an indictment of the party when one person doing nothing more than the morally right thing stands out so insanely brightly as courageous and literally putting his life on the line.

and they're the so-called party of morality.

Also interesting to see how Romney is acting this last year, and how McCain acted in the time before and the time after he ran for president, versus how they both acted while they were running for president.

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, February 12) -- The Senate acquitted President Bill Clinton Friday of both articles of impeachment. The perjury charge was defeated with 55 "not guilty" votes and 45 "guilty" votes. On the obstruction-of-justice article, the chamber was evenly split, 50-50. Below is the roll call:
