Biden calls Georgia law 'Jim Crow in the 21st Century' and says Justice Department is 'taking a look

Source: CNN

President Joe Biden on Friday called a sweeping elections bill signed into law in Georgia "Jim Crow in the 21st Century" and "an atrocity," saying the Justice Department is "taking a look" at the measure.

Asked if there was anything the White House could do to protect voting rights in Georgia, Biden told reporters on a tarmac in Delaware, "We're working on that right now. We don't know quite exactly what we can do at this point. The Justice Department's taking a look as well."

A spokesperson for the Justice Department told CNN earlier Friday that the agency is "aware of the law," but had no further comment.

In a statement released earlier Friday, Biden called on Congress to pass voting rights legislation that would counter restrictions Republicans are trying to push through at the state level across the country.

must see that.

There is no talk that will end it. Just federal power.

SCOTUS seems poised (perhaps as early as next week) to strike down interpretations of the 1965 voting rights act that focus on discriminatory impacts of state elections laws. Almost everything objectionable in the new GA law can only be challenged by that standard. The DOJ will be effectively toothless without either a new law clarifying the standard OR laws like HR1 creating a new federal standard (though that too will face challenges in the courts).

...I'll guarantee they'll take it up a notch. Then rinse/repeat.
I believe this really is a return to Jim Crow, if it ever left at all.

All these republicans care about is consolidation of power and keeping it that way.

What they are doing is downright scary. If they don't get the results they want, they just fire the election officials and put their own people in--giving them the power to do exactly what trump wanted last time. Trying to claim they are doing it for, "election integrity, is the biggest joke of all, especially when there is no evidence of wrongdoing ANYWHERE (reference all of the lawsuits thrown out of court). The video of state cops dragging the black legislator out was symbolic of what's wrong.

And its being tried across the country now with rethug governors. If they are successful, we can kiss any democratic and fair elections goodbye. Rethugs will rule forever, no matter what the voters want.
