Flags from the left-wing Antifa movement. Depictions of Pepe the Frog, the cartoon character that's been misappropriated by racist groups. Iconography from the far-right Proud Boys, including the phrase "stand back and stand by" from former President Donald Trump.
They are all signs that extremists could be infiltrating the military, according to internal training materials that offer a more detailed view into the array of radical groups and ideologies the Pentagon is trying to keep out of the ranks.
There are members of the [Department of Defense] who belong to extremist groups or actively participate in efforts to further extremist ideologies, states a 17-page briefing obtained by POLITICO that was compiled by the DoD Insider Threat Management and Analysis Center, which is part of the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency.
"Be aware of symbols of far right, far left, Islamist or single issue ideologies," it warns, stressing that members of the military and civilian personnel have a duty and responsibility to report extremist behavior or activity.

(4,793 posts)It can't be both. But since it is a mythical organization I guess it can have mythical attributes.

(111,255 posts)They know there are Antifa infiltrators and they have flags because Dumdum's boys told them so.
Besides, it has to look balanced, especially if it's not.
I wish someone would get through to these guys what "antifa" means and how to pronounce it. We can work on getting them to recognize it's not organized with leaders later.

(13,569 posts)...and so actually this article should have given her hyphenated name, I think. From what I see, she's still at Politico, although that organization recently lost about half of its reporters due to new management.

(15,324 posts)This would be the singular, most crystalline clear indication that the Pentagon is serious about rooting out extremist and seditionist.
Military folks are some of the worst gossips in the world. Recall some of those January 6 dipshits for Dishonorable and Big Chicken Dinner discharges, and the message will get out!

Also, anarchists are not Left-wing, they oppose government, no matter ideology.

(14,173 posts)Plenty of examples of RW nutcases and militias dedicated to fascism. And involved in violent actions.
How many examples of left wing mass shooters? James Hodgkinson, who was the shooter in Dayton, was a Sanders supporter and anti-Trump based on his social media.
But how many others? You are right about anarchists. They are not left wing. The left actually WANTS government, wants representation. Just more accountable and people power orientated government.
And Occupy was against the excesses and corruption of the capitalist system loopholes that allowed Wall Street to abuse their power and rip off average American's investments. But is that really just a left wing problem, or issue?
But they also know that the right in America will never take them seriously, or be very suspicious, if they were to come out and tell the truth; That the vast majority of more violent threats come from right wing groups, and so they will concentrate there. No, it has to be at least 50/50 expenditure and man power dedicated to each side, or the MAGAts will have a breakdown.

(7,895 posts)He makes it sound like there's no one with an impression at all of the infiltration. He may have a statistical point but the remark is entirely misleading. Racism isn't new in American military life. We've had a number of periods when we've been told the Armed Forces were looking into responding to and working to eliminate it. The idea that White Supremacists would try to infiltrate the command structure is neither new nor surprising. A number of organizations who monitor racist groups have been warning for some time that this was not only a goal but had already occurred.

(5,897 posts)We had our session the other day, and had a pretty good discussion about extremists in the ranks and how that's a bad thing.
I didn't get to use one of my favorite lines, "I hate Illinois Nazis". Maybe next time.
