NYPD Hate Crimes Unit investigating video of passenger punching, choking Asian man on subway
Source: The Hill
A division of the New York Police Department that handles hate crimes is investigating a now-viral video that shows a man relentlessly punching an Asian man on a subway car, apparently choking him until he became unconscious.
We need the publics help, the agency tweeted on Monday. The NYPD is aware of this video and is investigating.
The minute-long TikTok video was uploaded by Twitter user @AsianDawn4 around 1:30 a.m. ET on Monday and was reportedly recorded on a Manhattan-bound J train at the Kosciuszko Street station in Bushwick.
Police have not confirmed details of the incident, according to local outlet PIX 11. The Hill has reached out to the NYPD for comment.

(571 posts)I grew up in this neighborhood, and used to get off the "J" at this stop. You don't get involved in fights between strangers. If you have no experience riding the NYC subway, or living in NYC, you may not understand. I read a comment on Twitter saying it would have been different if he had been there, and I say "Yeah, right". NYC is a lot better, but there's still unpredictable violence that goes on, and guns aren't uncommon. Years ago a knife was almost a guarantee.
And there were people who yelled "Stop", especially while the victim was being choked. Someone on the video claims the assailant was called the "n-word". This incident saddens me, and I hope the person who did this is found.

(4,111 posts)and used to ride the subway (before Covid) all the time. There were numerous people on that train and you're telling me 5 men couldn't have stopped that asshole?
As to calling that guy the "n-word" - even if true, does that justify that violence?

(571 posts)You don't know what kind of weaponry a person might be carrying on the subway. NYC has come a long way since the Dodge City days of the '70s and '80s, but, for better or worse, minding one's own business has always been a part of life in that big city.
I don't condone the violence here. It was uncalled for and excessive.

(9,287 posts)to get him arrested. Cell phone cameras can help law enforcement solve this brutal attack. They can follow him on surveillance cameras after he leaves the station.
There have been so many attacks against Asians in NYC. An Asian woman beaten in broad daylight yesterday is incredibly disturbing. Hope her attacker is caught very soon too.
