'Don't put your kids' lives at risk': US ramps up ad campaign in Latin America fighting against disinformation

Washington (CNN) - The Biden administration has placed around 28,000 radio ads in Latin America as part of a stepped-up campaign to discourage people from journeying to the US. But amid a dramatic spike in migrants to the southern border, many of whom have been lured by false information and rumors from smugglers, it's not clear the ads are resonating.

At first, the message from the US government seems subtle. Set against a soft melody, a roughly 45-second radio ad running in Guatemala features a conversation between two men -- one who wants to join a caravan to travel to the US with his child and another trying to talk him out of it.

The man wishing to leave says that it's easier to cross the border with a child, but his friend quips that he's wrong and lays out the dangers of traveling north, saying they can be assaulted, kidnapped or killed, and run a higher risk of contracting coronavirus.

"Don't put your kids' lives at risk based on false hopes," the man argues, according to audio of a radio ad shared with CNN. A narrator then steps in to say people can get ahead in Guatemala, beseeching people not to leave and put their family at risk.

1. Scaravans of migrants

It's not just about chasing the vanishing American Dream.

Climate changes will create even more migrants--if you can't grow anything, to eat, you'll be hungry. If you can't take anything out of the ground to sell, you have no economy. Economic policies subsidizing corn and the use of corn in ethanol gasoline (corn = food) create a crisis.

Temperature changes will make more areas uninhabitable. Just like our hunter gatherer ancestors did, people will follow food. People will migrate to the inhabitable areas. Same is true of those coastal folks in the South. Climate change drives stronger hurricanes which will drive migration further inland, eventually.

Migration is connected to economics is connected to climate...

Biden seems to be able to view problems with a wide enough lens to avoid a piece meal, bandaid approach.

3. It's not going to work

on people who know their whole family has been marked for death by some narcojerk with a real or imaginary grudge, they see a perilous journey as their only hope to have their kids survive.

That's what this government simply can't manage to understand. People are doing this because they feel they have no other choice.

Until this country pulls its head out and ends the drug war, ending the large profits supporting the gangs, this will continue to be the case.

Oh, and perhaps we could extend a hand to Honduras in rewriting their constitution and getting the libertarianism out of it. The rich retirees on Roatan Island would scream bloody murder, but the government would be funded enough to provide some safety instead of none.

ETA: I live in a border state. We don't hear all the crap about scary brown people at the border because, hey, it's really not a problem here unless something goes wrong and a trafficker filling an order for workers in other states does something stupid. Human trafficking in this country is a big biz, and until and unless this government starts fining corporations that engage in it, this will also continue. Republicans don't want to inconvenience the corporations driving the trade in human beings. So far the Democrats don't seem particularly interested, either. I hope that changes.

kids are already at risk. Need to work with Guatemala, Mexico, etc. to reduce border crossings to US through the river. I think Mexico would be a far better place than Guatemala.
