Congressman Alcee Hastings, after career of triumph, calamity and comeback, dies at 84

Source: Sun-Sentinel

Congressman Alcee Hastings, whose life was marked by perseverance, calamity and a comeback, has died. He was 84.

Hastings crusaded against racial injustice as a civil rights lawyer, became a federal judge who was impeached and removed from office, and went on to win 15 congressional elections, becoming Florida’s senior member of Congress.

He died Tuesday morning, a longtime friend said.

In late 2018, Hastings was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. For much of the ensuing two years, he continued public appearances between medical treatments, but more recently he hadn’t been in public. In recent days, he had been in hospice care.

I guess that was inevitable. He was a firebrand and didn't let up. Just saw that they will have a special election for the seat since he was still a sitting congressman -

Special election will fill Alcee Hastings seat; timing is up to DeSantis

The vacancy created by the death Tuesday of U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings will be filled by the voters.

The Constitution requires elections for members of the U.S. House, and gives governors the responsibility for calling elections to fill vacancies. Florida law gives Gov. Ron DeSantis broad authority to decide on the timing of the special primary and general elections.

Democratic district

One thing that is almost guaranteed: The next representative from the Broward-Palm Beach County 20th Congressional District will be a Democrat.

I was hoping it wouldn't be one of those things where DeSantis would appoint someone. But now we have to see when he schedules a special election and hope he doesn't try to mess with that whole process.

my thinking about the vicious fascist governing Florida.

Even going so far to think if he does try to mess with it.. how enraged Dems should be.

I also confess that, had the identical story been about a Republican, my assessment would not be as kind. I'm not that happy to realize that.
