Source: Charlotte Observer

YORK COUNTY, SC -- Five people were killed Wednesday and a sixth wounded in York County in a mass shooting by a suspect caught in a manhunt that ended early Thursday, officials said.

The victims included a prominent Rock Hill doctor and his wife, two of their grandchildren, and a worker who was at the doctor’s Marshall Road home outside Rock Hill where the shootings took place, police and coroner officials said.

York County Sheriff’s Office deputies said an eight-hour manhunt ended around 1 a.m. at a home near where the shooting happened.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast identified the victims found dead in the house as: Dr. Robert Lesslie, 70; his wife, Barbara Lesslie, 69; Adah Lesslie, 9; and Noah Lesslie, 5.

All the gun advocates will sing that had the doctor had a gun, it would not have happened. I know what I would like to do with all their damn guns.

I respond, "Sure, but if you give everyone a gun, what the hell do you think is going to happen?"

This couple was facing the best years of their lives: after successful careers, they were spending time with their grandchildren.

Dr. Lesslie, as those of you who read the story know, was a major contributor to healthcare services in that area.

He wrote an inspirational book for those who face the emergency room. Here's the synopsis from Amazon:

Twenty-five years in the ER could become a résumé for despair, but for bestselling author Dr. Robert D. Lesslie, it's a foundation for inspiring stories of everyday "angels"—friends, nurses, doctors, patients, and even strangers who offer love, help, and support in the midst of trouble.

"The ER is a difficult and challenging place to be. Yet the same pressures and stresses that make this place so challenging also provide an opportunity to experience some of life's greatest wonders and mysteries." Dr. Lesslie illuminates messages of hope while sharing fast-paced, captivating stories about:

discovering lessons from the ER frontline
watching everyday miracles unfold
holding on to faith during tragedy and triumph
embracing the healing balm of hope

For anyone who enjoys true stories of the wonders of the human spirit, this immensely popular book is a reminder that hope can turn emergencies into opportunities and trials into demonstrations of God's grace.

This is one of only six books written by Dr. Lesslie. They all seek to provide inspiration for people and provide an inside look at the practice of medicine.

Not many people are able to accomplish so much in so many arenas. Heartbreaking that this was the end of such a successful life.

And let's not forget the worker who was there, just doing his job, as so many of us do every day.

And all because this country can't get a handle on the violence in television and computer games, weapons control, and mental health.

We can be thankful, however, that President Biden is announcing some measures today. It's a start.
