Covid-19 hospitalizations among younger people are rising in the US -- especially in one region

Source: CNN

(CNN)The US just hit a record high of about 4.6 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines reported administered in one day, according to data published Saturday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Amazing Saturday! +4.63M doses administered over total yesterday, a new record," Dr. Cyrus Shahpar, the Covid-19 data director at the White House, wrote on Twitter. "More than 500K higher than old record last Saturday. Incredible number of doses administered."

The new record is great news -- but it comes at a complicated time in the pandemic for the US.

While Covid-19 vaccination numbers climb across the country, Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations are also on the rise, fueled by the B.1.1.7 variant, which is now the dominant strain in the US. Experts say the variant is more contagious, may cause more severe disease and is also potentially more deadly.

Michigan is currently among the hardest-hit states in the country and local officials say the state is in the middle of another surge, reporting thousands of new cases daily.

The state also has the second-highest number of reported cases of the B.1.1.7 variant after Florida, according to

We're at almost 3000 cases a day, when we were at 1000 just a month ago.

We're approaching 50% immunized, but outside of major cities we have a huge conservative population that refuses to get vaccinated.

My factory offered Pfizer shots. 4 hr of extra pay as an incentive. We got less than 50% participation from a factory of 100 workers.

My wife works in a pharmacy connected to a grocery store. The other night they had extra vaccine left and struggled to find takers for it among the employees.

I'm afraid it's going to be a struggle to hit herd immunity.

declined the vaccine even with extra pay, also the lack of employees interested in getting the shot at your wife's workplace.

How can we have this many indifferent, ignorant and reckless Americans?

The country needs major work God knows.

9. My son has been isolating for a year, while at home university and work, in Minneapolis.

He finally got his J&J Thursday. I am so relieved and happy he did that. My youngest at school in Texas got his last Pfizer end of March. Thrilled with that too. They were both isolating for a year and at their age, that is so hard, I think. Harder than my old ass, anyway. But I feel so much better now they are vaccinated.

Not a good combination. Thankfully our vaccines work well against UK covid.

Seems like a profound revelation to be buried so far down in the article.

To me, anyway.

get the other next week. Rather than becoming a little lax with masks and distancing, I've found myself being hyper-aware of those around me. It's like I've made it this far, and can't imagine letting my guard down and risking not only my life, but the life of others when we're so close. The mind-set of so many people in this country is such a challenge.

I don't intend to suffer because some folks can't be bothered to fulfill their basic responsibilities to their fellow humans.

I remember the mask and I wear it in solidarity, but I am getting back to the norm on not considering myself or other dangerous. But while waiting for second vac, I told myself the same. I will be damn if I get it now. Though the first shot alone helps a lot and even if gotten, not as bad or determental.

12. From an mlive.com article I read, the Thumb area of MI is the national hot zone.

It is the area about 100 miles north of Detroit, I also read that about 1/3 of those showing up to ERs and clinics are positive for the virus.

It is an area I have to travel into weekly. It is also chocked full of deplorables. Mask compliancy is deplorable as well.

Even though I am fully vaccinated, I still mask up when up there.

My brother in law, who was always a gun nut, lives a couple of counties south, in a rural area. He was kind of an affable one, and one who I only fairly recently started talking to again, because he’s also a racist piece of shit. Anyway, told my husband this in a phone call.

Also, No, I am NOT kidding

Husband “so are you getting ready for the vaccine.”
BIL “No we don’t do that kind of shit around here. I’ve got guns
Husband “what you’re going to shoot the virus?”

This resulted in an acrimonious exchange where my husband almost got hung up on. Sounds like dear BIL drank the Trump koolaid. We’re just cutting him off again. His wife used the term “Sandn****r in another phone call, so the detente where they agree to keep their racist shit to themselves is obviously over.

It hurts my husband, but he wants nothing to do with that behavior. Fuck those people.

If it's infecting people who are following all the guidelines, then I'd be concerned. I hope everyone who wants a vaccine will get vaccinated soon.

As people travel more, the virus and new regional variants will spread around more. It won't be contained in the upper midwest when folks take vacations this summer.
