WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Vice President Kamala Harris said on Wednesday she intends to visit Mexico and Guatemala soon as part of her plan to use diplomatic efforts to slow migration to the U.S.-Mexican border.
President Joe Biden, who has moved away from his predecessor Donald Trumps hardline immigration approach, gave Harris the job of leading U.S. efforts with Mexico and Central Americas Northern Triangle countries - Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala - to stop migrants from crossing into the United States.
Harris spoke to reporters on Wednesday while participating in a virtual roundtable with experts who offered recommendations on the region, focusing on the core causes of migration in the Northern Triangle.
Our focus is to deal with the root causes, and I am looking forward to traveling, hopefully as my first trip, to the Northern Triangle, stopping in Mexico and then going to Guatemala, Harris said.
Participants in the meeting included: Ambassador Nancy McEldowney, national security adviser to Harris; Andrew Selee, president of the Migration Policy Institute think tank; and Lisa Haugaard, co-director of the Latin America Working Group nonprofit advocacy group.

(21,604 posts)Nixon's visit sparked outrage in Venezuela mainly because of the U.S.-backed coup earlier that year against populist President Marcos Pérez Jiménez - who had done more than anyone up to then to try to parlay Venezuela's oil wealth into infrastructure and higher living standards generally (rather than let it be offshored into Miami accounts, as is usually the case).
So there was a proximate cause for the anger - as your photos illustrated so well.
In Ms. Harris' case, she'd probably be popular anywhere she goes in the region thanks to the fact that Biden's defeating His Orangeness was widely celebrated across Latin America.

(160,452 posts)The very idea Nixon should roll into Caracas, arriving like an imperial authority after nullifying the people's own choice of a President who worked hard to lift the suffering masses out of poverty would have infuriated people of any place in the world.
It's so important to point out the truth of the matter. It was total lunacy, and arrogance to have imagined he wouldn't meet resistance.
Vice President Harris is going with a clean slate, for sure. This Democratic leadership will treat them with respect, if the right-wing can't pressure them into cruel, disrespectful, shameful behavior toward our neighbors and fellow human beings.
So glad for the context. It means everything.
