Manchin balks at GOP's smaller infrastructure plan - says he can back $4 trillion as long as it's

Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia is open to a multitrillion-dollar infrastructure plan. He just wants to see the bill covered.

That could be bad news for Republicans hoping he'll break with his party on the next massive plan from President Joe Biden's desk.

Manchin - a moderate Democrat with incredible influence over Senate Democrats' agenda - rebuked the GOP's infrastructure plan on Thursday. These comments could reverberate widely.

A group of Senate Republicans is preparing a plan that could range from $600 billion to $800 billion, drastically undercutting President Joe Biden's $2.3 trillion proposal. Separately, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is reportedly telling his caucus to praise Manchin in an effort to win his support.

And still has to come up with funding that he'll support.

But at least it gets past the need for ten republicans.

Bipartisanship and all that rubbish
In his defense, he seems to believe we should pass this in the spirit of bipartisanship and then, later, maybe go for a reconciliation bill for the rest
I'm just not buying it. You grab what you can get asap. Greater chance of getting the country behind it and having it stick

When we have the majority, we railroad everything we want and don't care what the Democrats say.
When we are the minority, we obstruct everything to water it down so we get our way, then complain to right wing echo chamber boot lickers that the Democrats are turning the country into a Single Party authoritarian state.

DC STATEHOOD!

That’ll mean two more Democrats in the Senate. And Manchin won’t matter anymore.

Or even a slight Democratic edge is fragile given what might happen during a future election cycle. DC statehood is in order, but in the meantime stuff can happen. Consider an aging Democratic Senator with health issues coupled with a GOP governor itching to appoint an interim replacement if the seat was (God forbid) vacated? The kind of stuff Mitch and minions dream of. The Manchin trade-off scenario is no solution, and until DC statehood is actually ratified, it's not a sound back-up strategy.

strikes me as someone who, despite opinions you find here on DU, as pretty smart even with the aw-shucks WV demeanor. He wavers in the middle on both sides, grabs attention, and punches above his perceived influence level. If he's getting both sides to think things through it's not a bad thing. We'll get used to him.
