Israeli intel agencies believe Vienna talks will lead to U.S. return to Iran nuclear deal

Source: Axios

Barak Ravid, author of from Tel Aviv

Israeli military intelligence and senior officials in the Mossad briefed a meeting of the nation's security cabinet that talks in Vienna between Iran and other world powers will lead to the U.S. returning to the 2015 nuclear deal, two officials who attended the meeting told me.

Why it matters: The Israeli government is very concerned about a U.S. return to the nuclear deal and is trying to convince the Biden administration not to take the pressure off the Iranian regime.

Driving the news: The Mossad mainly briefed the cabinet meeting on the status of the Iranian nuclear program. Military intelligence officials discussed Iranian actions in the region at the meeting.

Israel wants a war with Iran and wants the US to fight it. I hope Biden holds strong on this.

I won't say who, or what for, but the people there are convinced that only an Iraq-style war will "stop" Iran.

I pointed out that the Iraq war wasn't a good idea. They weren't convinced.

We need the US to act in our best interests here. That means working to keep Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, but not being suckered into another stupid war.

Their recent attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities was meant to enrage Iran and have them pull out of the deal. Israel receives $3 billion annually from the US plus military aid. Trump signed a new deal late in 2020 giving them a huge increase in military aid, to the tune of $38 billion through 2028. So American taxpayers spend huge amounts on our military, which then gives billions of dollars worth of equipment away.

The per capita GDP for Israel was $43,592.1 in 2019 (compared with $65,297.5 for the US), a number quite a bit higher than that of many of our allies, like Italy, France, and Spain who receive little US foreign aid. Is there a reason we should keep giving so much aid to Israel when they could afford to buy military equipment?

In return for our aid, they are trying to sabotage US plans for a nuclear agreement. Is Israel being an ally or a saboteur? One has to ask whether we’re getting our money’s worth for billions of dollars in aid.

Now imagine if some of those billions had been spent rooting out corruption in Central America and helping to build safer communities for their citizens. The return on our investment might have been far better.
