Walter F. Mondale, the former Democratic senator and vice president whose unusually candid and forward-looking bid for the pinnacle of American politics was blocked by President Ronald Reagans landslide reelection victory in 1984, died April 19 at his home in Minneapolis. He was 93.
Family friend and spokeswoman Kathy Tunheim announced the death but did not provide a specific cause.
Mr. Mondale was a major player on the national political stage for two decades, beginning in 1964, when he was appointed to the Senate seat from Minnesota that his political mentor, Hubert H. Humphrey, had given up to become President Lyndon B. Johnsons vice president.
On Capitol Hill, Mr. Mondale rose in the party hierarchy while establishing a reputation as a diligent legislator and a champion of such liberal causes as open housing and anti-poverty programs. His star ascended still further in 1976 when Jimmy Carter, the former Georgia governor and Democratic nominee for president, chose him as his running mate.

(7,947 posts)I remember part of his platform was reducing the 40-hour week, which I'm still all for. He had a real sense of what life is like for regular people.

(15,381 posts)She was a Democrat, and loved Carter. She said "How could the people trust Reagan over Carter, who is such a good man?"
Well, flash forward to 1984. Who did she vote for? Reagan. There were far too many similar cases in that election. Reagan just had a knack for making the average person like him.

RIP, Vice President Mondale. In his home state his passing is certainly going to overshadowed by the Chauvin trial. Am I wrong?

(23,208 posts)At end of the debate, he came in and made an impassioned speech to his supporters. I NEVER heard a man speak with so much energy and passion for the things we believe in! It really drove me to work my ass off for him. Our country lost so much when the electorate chose that dunderhead Reagan over Fritz Mondale.
Gideon's Trumpet -- Anthony Lewis, NYT editorial columnist, wrote a book about the Florida man whose struggle to get competent legal representation in his criminal case went to the US Supreme Court as Gideon v. Wainwright. In the process of developing its side of the case, Florida's AG wrote to all states' AGs asking them to join with Florida in submitting briefs to the Court defending Florida's denial of legal assistance to Gideon. One of those AGs, from Minnesota, refused to join with Florida in this, and instead invited the states to join in submitting briefs supporting Gideon's appeal. That Minnesota AG was Walter F. Mondale. Most of the states in the country joined Minnesota's amicus brief, and Gideon, aided by this and future Associate Justice Abe Fortas as his SCOTUS lawyer, won his case and secured the constitutional right of state criminal defendants to be represented by counsel in all criminal cases. When you hear the cop tell you you have the right to an attorney, and one will be appointed for you if you cannot afford it, you have Walter Mondale partly to thank for it.
We have truly lost a great champion for justice and equality.

(549 posts)"we should be bringing manufacturing jobs back to America" I ask if they voted for Mondale. I was living in Pittsburgh in 1984 and I knew what was at stake. If you look at the Penna. voting map from that election, it's quite enlightening.
