Ukraine says Russia will soon have over 120,000 troops on its borders

Russia will soon have more than 120,000 troops on Ukraines border, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Tuesday, calling for new Western economic sanctions to deter Moscow from further escalation.
Washington and NATO have been alarmed by the large build-up of Russian troops near Ukraine and in Crimea, the peninsula that Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
Western officials say the concentration of forces is now larger than during that annexation. The figure given by Kuleba is higher than Ukraines previous estimate of 80,000 Russian troops, of which 50,000 were new deployments.
"Russian troops continue to arrive in close proximity to our borders in the northeast, in the east and in the south. In about a week, they are expected to reach a combined force of over 120,000 troops," Kuleba told an online news conference.

You don't amass that many troops unless you're going to use them. Say goodbye to Ukraine, and welcome the resurgence of Russian global power. Oil prices going up is also super beneficial to the Russian economy.

(45,380 posts)I'm sure they want to avoid war with Russia. So they might just let Putin take the Russian-speaking piece of Ukraine like he did with Crimea in hope he'll stop there.
Or this could be another Hitler invades Poland. Who knows.

(6,460 posts)Don't think for one moment that Russia will stop at taking just another piece of Ukraine. And, if it takes Ukraine, it will NOT stop there. This is a serious threat to EU, and someone in EU better care in a large way.
Don't forget that Russia recently warned us against boots on the ground and sending equipment. Plus, they are now bosom buddies with China. So, yeah, this is a big deal.
As someone said, you don't amass troops like that unless you intend to use them. They could swing up north and head for the coast Those three little countries up there would have almost no chance of surviving without help from somebody.
We can't just simply watch this happen. It affects everyone. They got away with Crimea, and now they are back for it all. Maybe the Russian people themselves can revolt and free themselves.
The cautionary tale is that, no presumption should be made that Russia will stop with Ukraine. Whether we like it or not, Russia needs to be shown its actions are going to be opposed.
