Biden administration says it 'strongly supports' making D.C. the 51st state

Source: Washington Post

The Biden administration issued a policy position Tuesday in support of D.C. statehood, forcefully backing legislation to make the District the 51st state ahead of a House vote scheduled for Thursday.

Noting Washington’s “robust economy, a rich culture, and a diverse population of Americans from all walks of life,” the administration said the proposed State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth would “make our Union stronger and more just.”

“For far too long, the more than 700,000 people of Washington, D.C. have been deprived of full representation in the U.S. Congress,” the administration wrote. “This taxation without representation and denial of self-governance is an affront to the democratic values on which our Nation was founded.”

It is the strongest backing the statehood cause has ever received from the White House.

Maybe they can make a good enough case on how it affects the budget. Or make an exception ColinC Apr 2021 #2
No way will the Senate Parliamentarian go along with that Polybius Apr 2021 #4

Good luck getting a single Republican to vote to give Democrats two more Senate seats.

which needs 51 votes, for this specific case. It can be done if the will exists. But I'm doubtful.

She took out the $15 minimum wage, which actually could be considered economic.

They chose not to override it with 15 dollar min. wage, but could make a different decision with DC as a state.

They didn’t overrule the last one, and there was grounds to do so. This would me much more controversial.

But every Democrat must vote Yes. Perhaps temporarily remove the filibuster for this vote.

It’s either there or it isn’t. The temptation to remove it again for anything anyone likes in the future would be too great.

It's about the long history -- too long to get into -- of the corporatization of this nation all the way back to Jamestown and Plymouth set up, founded, and incorporated by the Virginia Company of London.
