Alabama Gov. Ivey signs ban on transgender athletes
Source: Associated Press
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Republican Gov. Kay Ivey on Friday signed legislation restricting transgender students from participating in K-12 sports, making Alabama the latest conservative state to ban transgender girls from playing on female sports teams.
Iveys office announced in an email that she had signed the bill that says a public K-12 school may never allow a biological male to participate on a female team. Asked if the governor had a comment on the decision, spokeswoman Gina Maiola said she could confirm the governor signed the bill but did not elaborate.
Supporters of the bill, HB 391, say transgender girls are born bigger and faster and have an unfair advantage in competition. Opponents argue the bills are rooted in discrimination and fear, and violate the federal law barring sex discrimination in education.
HB 391 is nothing more than a politically motivated bill designed to discriminate against an already vulnerable population. By signing this legislation, Gov. Ivey is forcefully excluding transgender children. Lets be clear here: transgender children are children. They deserve the same opportunity to learn valuable skills of teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy competition with their peers, Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David said in a statement.

Legislation like this is further proof of just how stupid and hate-filled Republicans really are.
Oh, well. Forget it, Jake . . . this is Alabama.

And, they run the risk of deciding that some female is really male, and challenging that person's right to be on a team. If I were that parent, I'd launch the biggest lawsuit the school system ever saw. I'd get my child's college tuition out of it. And, whatever therapy they would need. Could be millions, I suppose...

The rest of the state pretty much sucks. Apologies to any DU Alabamans.

(43,442 posts)"biological male" is a broad term. There is physical (outward appearance), mental, hormonal, biological. I absolutely do not understand trans kids and the complexities of growing up, or what they experience and feel. Leave that to professional psychology. But I suspect someday there will be metrics - biologically - to what is involved.
So someday it will all be challenged.
