In GOP response to Biden, Sen. Scott says America is 'not a racist country

Source: Washington Post

Scott, who is the only Black Republican in the Senate, focused on race during his response to Biden’s remarks, saying that “America is not a racist country.”

The senator from South Carolina made the comment as Democrats have increasingly talked about “structural racism” and pointed out that many key U.S. policies, including housing and lending rules, have systematically targeted Black Americans and other non-White citizens. These policies have — among other problems — made it harder for minorities to accumulate wealth and increased stress, which has lead to poorer health.

Scott held up his own biography to prove that the traditional notion of the American Dream persists. “My grandfather, in his 94 years, saw his family go from cotton to Congress in one lifetime,” Scott said, referencing his own roots.

He argued that Republican changes to the voting laws that Democrats have decried as racist are in fact popular with African American voters, including tighter voter ID laws.

18. No, he is lying...what a tool that guy is, how many blacks are in the republican party?

If I am not mistaken, there is one black republican senator and one black republican in congress, and there is no racism in his party?

He is lying, he was sent there to lie, and he not only lied about racism, he lied about many other things. I hope someone did a fact-check on his "speech".

2. Pathetic. A perfect poster child for the Republican Party. " I made it, and screw anyone else who

didn’t”

He wants to use himself as an example to argue that systemic racism doesn’t exist. Anecdotal justification?

I don’t think he speaks for the majority of African Americans

9. Disingenuous

Biden never said America is a racist country. Most white people wouldn't want to admit that it is, but they might admit that systemic racism is a problem.

11. Someday, hopefully soon, Sen. Scott will hear a loud pop . . .

That will be the day when his head pops out of his ass.

A denial like this is truly sad and insulting.
The evidence to the contrary is overwhelming.
His party-line statement betrays the pain of many who are living in the
reality of our racist, dehumanizing, hateful, divided country.
At best, we are an apartheid nation.
At worst, we are creeping ever closer to fascism.
Unless they get honest, people like him are just spiritually bankrupt.

Tried to listen to it, but couldn't take any more after the first 15 seconds or so, just had to leave.

Scott has to be insane!

AS soon as he said, "Biden seems like a good man...", I had my husband turn it off. The use of the word "seems" indicates he does not think Biden is a good person. FUCK HIM!

19. Scott didn't give a rebuttal. He did a rerun of tired old Republican lies.

I listened as long as I could, but he had no emotion in his voice. He sounded more like someone who was being forced to give a speech he did write. If he believes all the crap he said, he’s just as delusional as the rest of his tribe of out-of-touch Republicans.

during a traffic stop, would he survive?

"Oh I thought he was reaching for a gun."

"He didn't follow instructions perfectly."

"Here's the funny part, he said he was a Republican Senator."

He continues to be a disgrace.

25. About that "Cotton to Congress" line.....

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/04/23/tim-scott-often-talks-about-his-grandfather-cotton-theres-more-tale/

Our research reveals a more complex story than what Scott tells audiences. Scott’s grandfather’s father was also a substantial landowner — and Scott’s grandfather, Artis Ware, worked on that farm. Scott’s family history in South Carolina offers a fascinating window into a little-known aspect of history in the racist South following the Civil War and in the immediate aftermath of slavery — that some enterprising Black families purchased property as a way to avoid sharecropping and achieve a measure of independence from White-dominated society.
The Facts

Notwithstanding inconsistencies in the ages listed, we believe we located Lawrence Ware, who was born in 1861, in the 1870 census and the 1880 census. His father, who is listed as not being able to read or write, was a farmer and Lawrence is listed as a field hand in the 1880 census. When we fast forward to the 1910 census, Lawrence Ware is recorded as owning his ow n farm and a home without a mortgage. He is able to read and write. He and his wife have nine children, including Willie Ware, Scott’s great-grandfather.

29. America.Is.A.Racist.Country.

That doesn't mean every American is racist. It means structural racism is embedded in our legal system, judicial system, education system, economy, banks, and so much more of what makes a country a country.

30. Only one black republican in the Senate, and there's no racism in the United States.

However there are twice as many black republican Representatives:
Burgess Owens of Utah, and Byron Donalds of Florida.

According to the Pew Research Center, about 23% of Congress is from racial or ethnic minorities, twice the number that was in Congress in 2001.
Of those members, 83% are Democrat, and 17% are republican.
This is still low compared to the percentage breakdown by race across the nation, but improving.

It's clear to see that the Democratic party has done a much better job of diversifying it's representation in Congress.
The Republicans are lagging far behind. Why?
It couldn't be because the Republican base is mostly white, could it? If the republican party is not racist, how come so few people of color are elected on the Republican side?
How come diversity exists in the Democratic party to a much higher degree than on the Republican side?

Could it be that the Republican party, through it's words and actions, attracts people who don't like non-whites? In another word, racists.
Of course Tim Scott would never say the Republican party is racist. After all, that would cost him his seat in the Senate.
There are currently 3 black US Senators. There were 4 for a short time, but one of them, Kamala Harris, left to become Vice-President.

If the republicans weren't so busy with voter suppression, there might be more.
But, of course, voter suppression isn't racist. Just ask Senator Scott.
