BOONE, N.C.
A North Carolina sheriffs deputy has died and another deputy has been wounded in a shooting that prompted a continuing standoff.
Watauga County Sheriffs Sgt. Chris Ward was dispatched to a home in Boone at 9:44 a.m. after the homeowner and his family didnt report to work or answer telephone calls, his office said in a news release. He and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox entered the home and were hit by gunfire, the statement said.
Sheriff Len Hagaman said Ward died at a hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee, where he was taken after being removed from the scene, while Fox remained inside the home, condition unknown, as the standoff continued.

Boone and Watauga County are little blue nuggets surrounded by a sea of red, as are many college towns in the South.

(101,403 posts)The story says they entered the house (when he and his mother and/or stepfather hadn't shown up for work and no one was answering the phone), and he shot them. Then he shot at first responders (including a firefighter) who tried to rescue them. So it was he who did all the escalating and shooting, and a heavily-armored response after that seems entirely appropriate.

We need to lighten up on some of the drug laws.
It'll be interesting to see how this confrontation came to be.
