Biden speech interrupted by protesters
Source: The Hill
President Biden's rally to mark his 100th day in office was interrupted as soon as it began by protesters calling for an end to detention centers and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Biden was in the process of thanking Georgia voters at the outset of his remarks when protesters could be heard shouting "End detention now" and "Abolish ICE." One protester called out "Our families are dying," and noted that they voted for Biden in the 2020 election.
"I agree with you," Biden called back. "I'm working on it, man. Give me another five days."

"There should be no private prisons, period," Biden added.

(35,662 posts)and at that early date, about all he could do. All the EO did was say that the federal government could not engage in contracts with private prisons. This affects only a small portion of prisoners. I'm not sure how much but the figure of 8 per cent comes to mind, but don't quote me on that.
So to sum up, all that EO did was transfer people out of private prisons to public facilities, which is good because it dealt the private prison industry a blow (did they ever scream) but it does nothing to accomplish the overall goal of ending mass incarceration. That is the ultimate goal.
It is what the people protesting were bringing to his attention. Also that previous actions didn't affect ICE.
Activists in this movement (I'm one of them and have been for a couple decades now) say that the larger, overall goal is to alleviate poverty, drug addiction, and homelessness. Ultimately that means economic equality. I would say that Biden's efforts with the American Families Plan and the American Jobs Plan are going to help achieve that goal. An example of how is that it is going to provide for jobs that do not necessarily require a degree. It also will benefit minority women through help with childcare. That will help strengthen minority familities (certainly not limited to that) economically.

(205,301 posts)And I'm glad to hear that appears to be the consensus pretty much everywhere - except for those who are insane enough to be still hanging on to the former guy.

(36,053 posts)I hope Biden goes to more battleground states to do more of the same. I think he's more welcome than conflict-driven biased media would have us believe.

(205,301 posts)Experiencing this president in person would certainly change hearts and minds of those who don't follow him on the news. I really wish he'd come here to New York, but I realize that's unlikely to happen. We're seen as a reliable "blue state" even though that's because of the more populous downstate - we could use some help up here in the Northeast!

(7,281 posts)at campaign rallies here in the Bay Area, It's usually the Vegan people who interrupt.
Not just in the crowd but actually go up ON THE STAGE protesting whoever our candidate is. It's not just obnoxious and disrespecting but it hurts the cause they're trying to promote.
