Biden Responds To Sen. Tim Scott: 'I Don't Think The American People Are Racist'
Source: NPR
President Biden says America is not a racist country, but that Black Americans have been left behind and "we have to deal with it."
In an interview on NBC's Today show that aired Friday, Biden was asked about the remarks Wednesday by Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., who delivered the Republican response to the president's address to a joint session of Congress.
Scott, the Senate's only Black Republican, said that "America is not a racist country" and warned that "it's wrong to try to use our painful past to dishonestly shut down debates in the present."
...
"I don't think the American people are racist," he said, "but I think after 400 years, African Americans have been left in a position where they are so far behind the eight ball in terms of education and health, in terms of opportunity."

(7,392 posts)There is no standard definition on what would make America a racist nation. Does it take more than systemic racism to make a nation racist. I can't answer that, can you. Accordingly that makes this a gotcha question and both VP Harris and Pres. Biden avoided the trap Scott set nicely. But Scott also stepped into it with his comment about 100 years ago the color of your skin meant one race was made to feel inferior but today it means whites are made to feel they are oppressors. First, I don't know where he came up with that because it is news to me but secondly since he based it on race he is saying we are racist against white people. Who else is saying that? White supremacist's are saying that for one. That is rather strange company for Scott to be in bed with and it makes one wonder why he would do that. Did he really not understand the meaning of the words his speechwriter penned for him to read?

(26,571 posts)and 74 million Americans voted for him. How do you vote for a racist if you're not one?

(185 posts)Jeez Louise. "I don't think the American people are racist," he said. That's a stretch.
Biden has repeatedly called out systemic racism recently, so this is a set back IMO.
Luckily, much of his policy-making support POC and marginalized people in general.
But not ALL his policies. I'm concerned about deportations, whilst conceding the numbers and reasons are hard to pin down.
