The businessman Andrew Yang is widely seen as the front-runner, mostly thanks to the celebrity profile that he accrued on the presidential campaign trail last year, when he mounted a quixotic run.
But with a ranked-choice voting system in place for the first time, and most voters still relatively unengaged and unaware of the candidates involved, no one has emerged with a clear path to victory.
Yang is the front-runner, but a vulnerable front-runner, Doug Schoen, a political strategist and longtime adviser to former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, said in an interview. It isnt clear to me now who will be his rival but a rival can and may well emerge.
On Wednesday, a major wrench flew into the campaign when Scott Stringer, the citys comptroller and the leading progressive in the race, was accused of sexual assault. Jean Kim, now a political lobbyist, said that when she was an intern for his campaign for public advocate in 2001, he kissed and groped her and pressured her to have sex with him. (Mr. Stringer denied the allegations, saying that he and Ms. Kim had had a brief, consensual relationship.)

Make me mayor and Ill hire one of my fellow candidates to run the nuts and bolts of City Hall.
That was Andrew Yangs broad message to The Posts Editorial Board on Thursday, as the Democratic front-runner pitched himself as a man who can build the right team to bring New York City back to life after the coronavirus pandemic while he coordinates and manages.
Youre going to need to build a team with a range of experience and, certainly, if Im the mayor, that team will need to consist of a number of people who are very deeply experienced in government, Yang said during the hour-long sit-down. Im already thinking about how to staff the administration and make sure we can actually move the bureaucracy.
While others would manage the day-to-day, Yang said that he views the job of mayor as team-building, culture-setting and orchestrating and improving relationships between the public and private sector.

(81,856 posts)Trump was incredibly bad at it. Bloomberg tried it in the city and certainly did better than Trump. Doing this only works if you are willing to get your hands dirty and be accountable. Bloomberg was occasionally aloof and dismissive of problems. It can work if Yang is willing to exercise his power when needed. Otherwise, it will be a mess. I think he's aware enough to engage with the job. We'll see if he makes it that far.

(38,601 posts)But Joe clearly is driving the direction and goals and strategy, so as long as Yang can do that, he doesnt have to be tactical - as long as his team can handle tactics, and do so in an upright way.
Ok, its probably not as bad as I first thought.
