FAA warns of spike in unruly, dangerous passenger behavior

Source: NBC News

The Federal Aviation Administration is warning air travelers about what it describes as a dramatic increase in unruly or dangerous behavior aboard passenger airplanes.

In a typical year, the transportation agency sees 100 to 150 formal cases of bad passenger behavior. But since the start of this year, the agency said, the number of reported cases has jumped to 1,300, an even more remarkable number since the number of passengers remains below pre-pandemic levels.

“It is not permissible and we will not tolerate interfering with a flight crew and the performance of their safety duties,” Stephen Dickson, the administrator of the FAA, said of the wave of incidents. “Period.”

The FAA is now taking a “zero-tolerance” approach to poor behavior: Unruly passengers face potential criminal charges, fines up to $35,000 or lifetime bans on certain airlines.

1. Lifetime bans on all air travel should be penalty. Stores should get permanent restraining orders.

.

After these humps shit on Targets, Wal*Marts and their local supermarkets, they'll be fucked.

2. I'm sure some of these are drunk people; but I'm guessing most of these 1,300 are maskholes.

15. Well

I was a rock and roll singer and musician for over 40 years. I have partied until the sun came up four days later. I have done things that a lot of you have never even heard of. Why say this? Simple. It has been my experience that those people who 'become' horrible people when they get drunk are not going through any magical metamorphosis, they are just letting what they normally keep inside free. I have seen no one 'change' when inebriated. What I see is someone who had a lot to hide socially and has now put him/herself into a situation where they have cast off any inhibitions. So, they may have been drunk, but that is just an excuse for letting the beast out and then trying to change reality because they did so. Anyone who is a mean asshat when they are drunk is a mean asshat when they are sober, some are just better practiced at hiding it.

Having said that... I agree. They are just orange gibbon worshippers...

4. GOOD last 2 flights I was on for business 03/20, over a year ago, the police greeted assholes

coming off the planes. Another from early 2020 another asshole spilled a drink including some on me and on the airplane never said sorry oops or anything
Drunk and wanted the attendant to clean it up but they gave him a rag and bag to clean instead as
I left to the front for some soda water as it had splashed on my pants when I came back he had thrown the rag and the bag in the aisle for the attendant to pick up off the floor
The worse was a young man who made a big thing about how he didn’t have to put his tray and seat up at landing because freedumb Harassing an older female attendant I might add

Post March 2020 I can not imagine what now is left flying I mean sure there’s still business serious flyers and others behaving themselves taking precautions but I bet it’s a lot crazy too the type they don’t care about Covid or getting along with anyone else on the plane let alone the crew (to them thier lowly servants)

I probably would last on a flight job a week before the cops were waiting when it lands to take me off because I had punched somebody on the plane I have to say it

17. Yeah, same here. I would not last long as a flight attendant. I worked in

retail years ago and that was bad enough. But being stuck on a plane with stupid, entitled assholes would send me over the edge really quick. I'm always VERY appreciative of the flight staff whenever I fly because, man, I feel for the bullshit they have to deal with.

My only flight after the pandemic began was last summer (I couldn't really say no to this business trip because the pandemic killed my income). I purposely flew first class to limit the number of people in close proximity, and was very covered up. But wouldn't you know it, the woman sitting next to me thought she was clever, and would pull her mask down below her nose every time the FA would turn her back. The FA would tell her to put it back up, she would for five seconds, then pull it back down. I was losing my patience and about to go off on her when the guy across the aisle beat me to it. Thankfully, after a some junior high level retorts and eye rolls, she put it back up and kept it there for the rest of the flight. The amount of effort these people will expend to be "rebellious" is just so fucking ridiculous.

Do societies restore civility once it's seriously damaged?

6. Use some of the recovery plan money for more air marshals

They should be highly trained in martial arts/hand-to-hand combat, as guns and other "less lethal" options are terrible aboard a plane in the air. I just can't bring myself to cry that it means the surlies will get quite manhandled, plus face tens of thousands of dollars in fines, and then charges of felonious assault on a law enforcement agent, to boot. I'm not encouraging law enforcement officers to beat people up (that's way too Trumpy for me) but rather recognizing that these are people who are already evidencing disrespect of authority going into a confrontation with law enforcement, which lends highly to the probability of a physical altercation, since these idiots need to be restrained for the safety of everyone aboard.

8. you're dancing way too lightly

disorderly and confrontational conduct on an airplane is a f*cking safety issue -- and frankly I just don't give a sh*t if somebody gets tazed, zipped tied or immobilized -- just so long as they get the danger, and the friggin' moron causing it, contained! And then they can also be met for 'further instruction' upon de-planing (hopefully following all other passengers that saw fit to make the flight in compliance with the rules). And, personally, I'm not at all worried if they have to ruffle a few feathers (or put a few wrinkles in somebody's clothes) in order to do so.

10. Trump has sure made America grating again.

It's odd how many Republicans emulate Trumps selfish narcissism.
I would have thought that manners and decency was more ingrained and not so easily discarded.

11. Former airline ticket agent here.

I worked at DCA, Washington National airport from January 1969 to August, 1979. The main impact of that job was that I learned to hate people. Passengers were assholes and idiots, and most of the time had no idea what they were talking about. And that was long, long before the current problems.

In recent years, the rare times I fly, I purchase a first class ticket. I'm not willing to put up with more bullshit than is necessary. Oh, and because I originally went to work so many years ago, well before any kind of "security", I'm all too aware of the idiocy of the current security crap. It's pure theater, and I have no use for it.

At least with a first class ticket I avoid some of the nonsense.

12. I've flown over 1.5M miles over the past 40 years.

Not that I;m counting, and it's less that some and more than many.

I can't recall one instance of unruly behaviour that resulted in an arrest upon landing.

That said, there were a few instances where I wish there was.

Perhaps it's because most of my travel was international.

When I reflect on the current situation, I consider the the prior 4 years of jining up the Magats, combined with the past year of lockdowns, masks, physical distancing (I hate the term 'social distancing') along with general population depression to be a perfect storm for anti-social behaviour.

In other words, We just put the Hulk inside a submarine.

Should be if there isn't.

14. I figures this FAA announcement about an increase in disruption is all bullshit. They just want

Their funding increased.

If'n there were 1,500 incidents, there would be 1,500 videos posted on D.U.

Yeah, some of 'em would have had "Karen" in the title but we still would'a seen 'em all.

Imagining that the Trumpanzees are not acting out to unprecedented degrees is as absurd as imagining that the coronavirus will go away if you drink bleach and shove a sun lamp up your ass.
