Facebook oversight board upholds Trump account's suspension
Source: Reuters
Facebook Inc (FB.O)'s oversight board on Wednesday upheld the company's suspension of former U.S. President Donald Trump in a much-awaited verdict that may signal how the company will treat rule-breaking world leaders in the future.
Facebook indefinitely blocked Trump's access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts over concerns of further violent unrest following the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of the former president.
...........
The binding verdict marks a major decision for the board, which rules on a small slice of challenging content decisions and which Facebook created as an independent body as a response to criticism over how it handles problematic material. Facebook has also asked the board to provide recommendations on how it should handle political leaders' accounts.

(1,910 posts)This just says that within 6 months Facebook must review and determine that it was proportionate to other punishments which it was. In fact Trump got more chances than others so the ban will be upheld.

(53,865 posts)he is the better. He has no twitter either so in six months he'll be even less relevant and relatively silent in the public discourse. The cowardly GOP will continue to kiss his ass but de-platformed trump helps Joe Biden and the rest of us Dems.
The nation can move on and find out it doesn't need the constant vitriol.

(57,607 posts)The company banned Donald Trump indefinitely following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, citing posts that it said encouraged violence. The company referred the decision to its largely independent Oversight Board, which is Facebook-funded, to rule on a final decision.

(92,396 posts)still perpetuating the lie that he used to incite the insurrection was a major factor for revisiting this in six months, because at this time they view his actions as a real threat to incite violence against the government based on lies and disinformation.

(21,798 posts)Everyone seems to concede that if he comes back he will spew the same (and worse) crap he got suspended for in the first place.
Not even his supporters are claiming that he will act responsibly and within Facebook terms of service.

(1,910 posts)The board just said Facebook must review and make sure his punishment was proportionate to others which it was. Facebook will never let him back on because they are in a fight for the best employees to continue to grow. If they let him back on, they will lose plenty of talent to other tech firms.
He is never coming back on Facebook or Twitter.

(1,910 posts)The board said Facebook's own rules called for either a time limit on the ban or if the violations bad enough, an account deletion.
They will just delete the account and be done with it. Like others said, a financial decision because his followers will still use Facebook for various means and the loss of high level tech talent that hates Trump would have crippled their growth.

Never mind the Free Speech argument.
Try yelling FIRE in a packed theater. Or threatening death or bodily harm to a sitting President, VP, Congress members, and other elected officials.
You will quickly find that there are limits to FREE SPEECH!
Ban them all!
I would be totally with you on that. Ban them all. With one simple benchmark... lie and you are done. PERIOD!!

(22,166 posts)law and nail him for tax evasion, fraud, incitement of violence among his cult, and more. Our own government...witness how long things seem to be taking w/ all of the lawsuits put on hold simply because he was PINO. Where are all of the lawsuits and everything that was suspended? Why the delays? I suspect that the thug BARR was involved in some manner to illegally throw out these lawsuits, or worse, and even made fake judgments on disposing of cases, etc.
It is time to quit prancing around and avoid the issue(s) and start nailing trump to the wall.
