Peloton treadmills recalled, CEO apologizes for fighting U.S. regulators
Source: USA Today
Peloton has agreed to recall all of its treadmills and apologized for previously fighting the federal government's request to do so after the equipment came under scrutiny following the death of a 6-year-old child.
The exercise services company and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Wednesday jointly announced voluntary recalls of Peloton Tread+ and Tread treadmills, covering about 125,000 and 1,050 units, respectively, in the U.S.
Regarding the Tread+, the CPSC said it had received 72 reports of people, pets or objects "being pulled under the rear of the treadmill, including 29 reports of injuries to children such as second- and third-degree abrasions, broken bones, and lacerations."
"Consumers who have purchased either treadmill should immediately stop using it and contact Peloton for a full refund or other qualified remedy," the company and agency said in their joint statement.

(57,080 posts)... that went out of business over product liability was John-Mannsville over asbestos and that was planned to protect owners' other assets.
If they respond in a better way than they did when this broke while the libertarian company head resisted an opportunity to limit his liability and demonstrate how conscious of the public's safety it was, they could rebound stronger. I get the feeling that hiring a PR firm set off the apologies.
Look how well Excedrin and Blue Bunny rebounded from larger potential disaster than Peloton has.

(33,643 posts)There's no getting out of trouble on this, they were entirely negligent.
A lot of people, though, wanted to blame the parent(s) as I recall.
Peloton are going to have to buy back ALL of these devices, and quickly.
And I'll tell you why they're doing this ... there's internal emails of employees saying that this shit ain't safe, and being rebuffed. And it was over, I would bet, a part that costs like $20, that the execs didn't want to include cause it cut into margins.
On an already wildly profitable product I would add.

(9,888 posts)to this story. What is wrong with the product different from other treadmills? When I read that the child had been pulled under it I figured it was a very young child, but then it turned out he was 6!
