McConnell leads GOP in attack on Dems' voting rights bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans launched an all-out assault Tuesday on sweeping voting rights legislation, forcing Democrats to take dozens of politically awkward votes during a committee hearing that will spotlight the increasingly charged national debate over access to the ballot.

The bill would bring about the largest overhaul of U.S. elections in a generation, touching on almost every aspect of the electoral process. Democrats say the changes are even more important now as Republican-controlled states impose new voting restrictions after the divisive 2020 election.

Yet it’s a motivating issue for Republicans, too, with GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell so determined to stop Democrats that he’s personally arguing against the measure, a rare role for a party leader that shows the extent to which Republicans are prepared to fight.

Well turtle, oops #Moscow Mitch, I really don't like Judicial Watch, Heritage Foundation, Koch Industries, Peter Theil, buying judges to the bench like on the US Supreme Court, and I really hate Citizens United and just for the record did you read the latest on what Georgia is dong about buying votes.......

And we should take a look at who is buying you: just one of the biggest hedge funds in the country, why is that #Moscow Mitch?

1. McConnell is rotten to the core if he even has one.

Which I doubt. In a democracy, he is evil incarnate.

3. You are so right. Sometimes it is easy to forget

that evil does not exist in a vacuum.

4. Tone of article is frustrating...democrats 'politically awkward'....democrats on the defense...

McConnell personally involved...

they make a gesture toward stating there was no fraud but just continue to frame this as a POLITICAL fight for power rather than a fight for democracy. Where are the estimates of how many will be disenfranchised? Where's the summary of radical laws that states are enacting to limit votes?

As usual, the media is more interested in reporting on the head-to-head political drama than the underlying issues.

Warm milk article on a critical, important topic.

5. He said this:

We all learned early in life if you can write the rules you can win the game.”— Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), quoted by HuffPost, discussing his opposition to Democrats’ election reform and voting rights legislation known as For the People Act.

McConnell is evil.

7. Yes, he did.

He changed the filibuster rule twice. So can Schumer.

9. I'd rather see this headline: "McConnell, In Chains, Leads QOP Members As They All

Board A One-Way Flight To Gitmo". Enough already!

10. How else are they going to win elections?

Can they drum out the abortion... on demand!! again?
Tax cuts for the job makers? They milked that cash cow for what it's worth, like three times.
Get the govt out of the way? Out of the way of who? Oil companies? Telecoms? Banking? Done. done, and done!

I can't think of what else they have in their arsenal except blocking progress, and they're using up that ammo in a hurry now.

11. Voting Rights Bill Advances Over Republican Objections

The For the People Act, a package of voting rights, campaign finance, redistricting and ethics reforms, took the next step toward a Senate floor vote after the Senate Rules Committee debated and amended the bill on Tuesday amid universal opposition from Senate Republicans.

The bill, which passed the House on a near party-line vote in March, would set a national floor for elections by mandating states implement election reforms including early voting, no-excuse absentee ballots, and automatic and same-day voter registration. It would also restore voting rights to ex-felons while making it harder to purge voter rolls, among many other things.

Debate over it comes as Republican-run states, including Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Montana and Texas, are enacting laws to make it harder to vote. These voter restriction laws come in response to former President Donald Trump’s lie that he did not lose the November presidential election, a falsehood that inspired the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol aimed at disrupting the peaceful transfer of power.

-snip-

Legislation usually requires a majority committee vote to be sent on to the Senate floor, but under the rules negotiated after Democrats won a 50-seat majority in January, the bill can be discharged from committee by a simple majority vote on the floor of the Senate, where Vice President Kamala Harris can break ties.
