House Republicans on Wednesday officially voted to oust Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) from her leadership position after she continued to openly condemn both Donald Trump's lie that he won the 2020 election and his actions leading up to the January 6 Capitol insurrection.

That said, I really have to respect someone for putting country before party, regardless of the initial after her name.

(13,003 posts)that with this action, it will be most fascinating to watch where it goes from here...........
It is obvious with this vote, that these Quasi Republicans have abandoned ALL of the old Republican Party's beliefs......
and truly have become a Corporate Fascist Tyranny, rather than a Democracy.
Welcome to THEIR new Republican world................

Along with any other Republican Politician that dares to confront what the Republican party does................
There is one way they can handle it.....Defect to the Dem Party, along with a dozen Republican Senators.....
But they won't.
The Russian people are laughing their asses off at how easily Putin has played the Republican Party and their voters, destroyed the USA and Democracy, without starting a war, and without firing a single missile or rocket..................

(16,211 posts)what is the hold tRump has on the GOP? Does he have 'pictures'? Does he have some kind of dirt? Is he connected financially to whomever would bankroll an effort to primary any one daring oppose him? The real question is WHY is this happening? The answer is not 'because she's not loyal to tRump'. The answer is what has he done to elicit this blind obedience to him? A head scratcher for sure.........

(14,180 posts)You can wonder the same about any strongman throughout history. Only answer I have is the man is the ultimate Svengali/demagogue.
Or, hes just a really talented bullshit artist to a party whose collective IQ barely reaches room temperature.

(14,689 posts)Who else do they have who has that unique mix of qualities. A "successful businessman", a "TV star", a "playboy ladies man", a "not a career politician who tells it like it is". Who will lie about anything.... for himself first, but also for them.
Yeah its all very hypocritical. They say they hate the Hollywood elite, but have no problem using popular entertainment star power and celebrity to their advantage. Much like they did with Ronnie Reagan. They preach "family values" but dismiss those values in their leader. Multiple wives, cheating even while his last child was in the mother's womb.
I think leadership of the GOP sees Trump as the easiest, less complicated way to gain back the majority and presidency, with the built in engine of attracting the backing of the loudest, most influential part of the R base.
And the alternative, The Cheney Rebuild, is just too daunting a process, which would involve admitting they were wrong, and inviting the backlash of all those poor MAGAts that are fully committed to the the Trump cult.

(12,242 posts)They are laying waste to law and order now that they have learned how to do it.
It's been in their wheelhouse all along but it took that Criminal in Chief to show them how it's really done.
I don't think he has anything on them, maybe... but doubt it.
They have enough baggage as it is and probably wouldn't care at this point if something was revealed. At this point they see it as a badge of honor to get accused then spin it around or attempt to normalize it.
The republican party is a degenerate party with a degenerate leader and they only care about their bank accounts and the continued grifting to keep them overflowing.

(78 posts)McCarthy wants to be Speaker in 2022
so therefore he can't afford to cross Trump
or so the reasoning goes
but that's just the cover story
cuz Trump's poll numbers are weak
in the 2022 House swing districts
(the same polls that senior GOPs are withholding
from their own membership)
the real reason McCarthy
and senior GOPs still suck Trump off
is not cuz they can take back the House
it's cuz of the millions in campaign donations
they are reaping from MAGA suckers
just like how MTG lost her committee memberships
but has raised millions ever since
senior GOPs are backing Trump
cuz they're cashing in on MAGA sucker donations
it's not about winning the House in 2022
it's about keeping the gravy train rolling
Don fall for the SOP used by Rethugs. This is how they do their dance. Throw the Democrats/the left/progressives some sane, courageous, comments on preserving the Democracy (aka Rethug speak-Republic Government). Then as the swell of relief and congratulations pours forth from we Democrats of-Cheney as our ally. Mission accomplished. Now the right meme is rehabilitated once again. See there are sound, conservative, war mongering profiteers of the likes of Cheneys, Bushes, etc. that care about the integrity of true Democracy. Dont fall for it.
Come back to reality. The Cheney of the world will dismantle your franchise to vote faster than they can say Biden stole more than 7 million votes from that other guy.

(14,180 posts)....when they dont want to have to own up to/publicly defend their votes. The loudest voices win. I think its a bullshit procedure that needs to go away, especially on motions as consequential as this one was.
(Same goes for governors who sign unpopular bills behind closed doors or in the dead of night, but thats another thing.)

(2,640 posts)The only reason they still support Trump is because they believe maintaining the support of his rabid supporters is their best bet for winning elections. If Trump supporters suddenly came to their senses and dumped Trump, it would be "Trump? I barely knew the guy," from the GOP members who are currently pledging their undying loyalty to Orange Julius Caesar.
