Matt Gaetz has deleted a picture of Lee Harvey Oswald after he and several other conservative figures were tricked into retweeting a picture of President John F. Kennedy's assassin on Memorial Day.
Journalist Ken Klippenstein trolled prominent Republicans, including Florida Congressman Rep. Gaetz, American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp and conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza into sharing the picture of the infamous killer.
Klippenstein tweeted at the conservative figures and pretended Oswald, who was pictured wearing his army uniform, was a family member.
He asked Rep. Gaetz: "Congressman, my grandpa's a big fan of yours and is a veteran, he would be thrilled if you could RT this photo of him for Memorial Day. Here he is as a young Private First Class."

Sounds to me like Lee should be a hero in Gaetz's book.

(9,149 posts)Great piece of trolling though.
Amazing how thoroughly ignorant conservative "leaders" are about history, and yet how arrogant and self righteous.

(8,183 posts)A number of Marine Vets I knew personally, came home from Viet Nam, to openly rally and lead demonstrations against the war and had received Dishonorable Discharges. I suspect the Marine Corps issued these discharges for a number of mitigating matters, but none the less, Dishonorable Discharge was definitely a thing.
Didn't know they no longer issue those.
I know of one former General who needs to receive a Dishonorable Discharge post haste: Retired General, Michael Flynn
Which would immediately put an end to his benefits among other things.

(793 posts)Even if it predates Gaetz, the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald was the first known human killing seen live on broadcast TV. My siblings, and I, all saw it. We were already numb by JFK's assassination. (Immediately after JFK was shot, it was speculated that the Soviets did it and that America was about to be attacked. It seemed feasible as we had just, a year earlier, experienced the Cuban Missile Crisis. We had a fallout shelter in the basement of our grade school. Anyone old enough to remember the air raid drill sirens that would go off once a week?
They were loud as hell.)

(13,538 posts)The QIdiots aside, he asked them to make his grandpa's day by retweeting his picture & they actually did it, something a lot of high profile people would not see or may ignore. So they didnt know it was Oswald, ok. Maybe they should have, but they took the request as a serious one. The guy is a dick for "tricking" them into doing it to get publicity. Especially on Memorial Day.
Ive seen where people ask politicians to take a selfie & just when the pic is taken they flip them off or some other gesture. Even if its someone you dont like, you're just being an ass doing shit like that.
On the other hand, I cant wait to see charges against Gaetz come out. And they better.

(6,149 posts)I would hope they would have the common sense to know they were being trolled, but a lot of people just retweet without paying attention to the contents. Too late now. Every politician in DC is going to be on the lookout for these types of tweets for the next little while.
