FBI investigating Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in connection with his political fundraising

Source: Washington Post

The FBI is investigating Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in connection with campaign fundraising activity involving his former business, according to people familiar with the matter and a spokesman for DeJoy. FBI agents in recent weeks interviewed current and former employees of DeJoy and the business, asking questions about political contributions and company activities, these people said. Prosecutors also issued a subpoena to DeJoy himself for information, one of the people said. That person, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe an ongoing and politically sensitive investigation.

Mark Corallo, a DeJoy spokesman, confirmed the investigation in a statement, but insisted DeJoy had not knowingly violated any laws. “Mr. DeJoy has learned that the Department of Justice is investigating campaign contributions made by employees who worked for him when he was in the private sector,” Corallo said. “He has always been scrupulous in his adherence to the campaign contribution laws and has never knowingly violated them.” The inquiries could signal impending legal peril for the controversial head of the nation’s mail service — though DeJoy has not been charged with any crimes and has previously asserted that he and his company followed the law in their campaign fundraising activity.

Spokespeople for the FBI and Justice Department declined to comment. A spokesperson for the Postal Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment. DeJoy — who was appointed to run the Postal Service by its board of governors last May — has been dogged by controversy for almost his entire time in office. Soon after starting in the job, he imposed a series of cost-cutting moves that led to a reduction in overtime and limits on mail trips that mail carriers blamed for creating backlogs across the country. Democrats accused the prominent GOP fundraiser, who personally gave more than $1.1 million to the joint fundraising vehicle of President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign and the Republican Party, of trying to undermine his own organization because of Trump’s distrust of mail-in voting.

Two Democratic lawmakers, Reps. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) sent a letter to the FBI asking agents to investigate whether DeJoy or the Postal Service’s governing board “committed any crimes” in stalling mail. In a congressional hearing last year, DeJoy disputed he was trying to affect the vote. “I am not engaged in sabotaging the election,” DeJoy said at the time. “We will do everything in our power and structure to deliver the ballots on time.”

"The eyes are the window to the soul."

In DeJoy's case they (both eyes and soul) are black and cold.

There are an awful lot of willing, even eager "smackers," and such a variety of potential "smackees" that it's hard to believe.

No. Punch? Yes. I wouldn't be able to do much damage either way, as a 5'1" tall, 71 year old woman who has never had an athletic bone in my body, but it's fun to fantasize. 😁

He had employees of his corporation make political contributions which he later reimbursed to them via bonuses etc.

If it's proven via evidence he reimbursed them for their donations, that's illegal.

26. I was imagining an easy work around the problem of illegality

Not that I can spell that 'work around' out, but I'm fairly confident this criminal thug can.

I mean, these people have been committing financial fraud in every possible scenario and context for their entire lives. the game is rigged in their favor, else they wouldn't have been able to get away with it for so long.

Good to know, however. Maybe in this case, his arrogance left a few dangling pieces of evidence exposed just because he figured his guy in the white house would have another term in office and have the justice department cover his ass.

Keep waiting for justice to be done by the good guys, but keep getting disappointed instead. Barr's memos remain secret, Trump and his kids aren't in jail, Flynn hasn't been reinstated and court-marshalled, and De Joy's still Postmaster General.

13. You're not alone. We can kiss the 2022 midterms goodbye....

If there's no progress toward justice on some these issues. The electorate needs heads on pikes to prevent the no show at the polls cynicism syndrome. That's the primary cause of our national decline. You know. The depressing mistrust in anything. The issues they blame on immigrants or gays or poor people are actually ones of mistrust in government's ability to ever do the right thing.

44. Except sometimes rich people DO go to jail?

I know the criminal (in)justice system is heavily biased in favor of the rich, but rich, powerful people do go to jail sometimes, especially when it comes to so-called "white collar" crime. Martha Stewart is one example. Also Bernie Madoff. There have been others, too. See this link for more: [link: https://www.goliath.com/random/10-of-the-worst-white-collar-criminals-in-history/|https://www.goliath.com/random/10-of-the-worst-white-collar-criminals-in-history/]

People in Trump's circle have already gone to jail over stuff they did while aiding and abetting the Orange Hellbeast. I see no reason to assume that not a single one of the others will.

I'm not saying some people won't manage to wiggle out of it. Just pointing out that saying "Rich people never go to jail" is overly broad and demonstrably false.

41. This has been known for a long time.

Back when his business investors wanted some cash out he tried to take his company public. the unexplained "bonuses" paid out to staff caused SEC to deny going public. It seems the bonuses were approximately equal to their Republican donations. The feds grind very slowly, but they do grind. Their conviction rate is over 90% last I checked. It seems to me that it would also involve tax fraud since the "bonuses" were taken out of gross profits illegally. personally I think the feds are being overcautious because they are afraid the prosecution might be called by some a partisan "witchhunt". I also think unless the head of the organized crime organization is brought to justice we will have no justice. I'd wager he got a lot more than a handshake, a thank and the job as Postmaster Generalyou from the politicians he funded so maybe bribery is in there, too. It's like picking up a rock and finding the motherlode of slimy creatures. That's one of reasons the R's are willing to go to any length to hold onto power. It has nothing to do with philosophy and a whole lot to do with staying out of prison.
