Coca-Cola Was Just Banned in This One Southern County

Source: MSN

If it were a really hot summer day in the South, you'd seek out a nice, cold drink, right? That just got a little tougher in one North Carolina community, after county leaders decided to ban all Coca-Cola vending machines over what they refer to as Coke's "left-wing" values.

If it were a really hot summer day in the South, you'd seek out a nice, cold drink, right? That just got a little tougher in one North Carolina community, after county leaders decided to ban all Coca-Cola vending machines over what they refer to as Coke's "left-wing" values.

Big brands face routine controversies, and the Coca-Cola Co. has had plenty on its plate lately. In particular, the beverage giant has been an unexpected player in the 2020 U.S. Presidential election's fallout, as the Atlanta-based brand issued a public statement addressing their view of what conservative Georgians call the "Election Integrity Act." If passed, the bill would complicate the logistics that enable some Georgians to vote. Some Democratic figures in government have stated that the bill is unjust and even racist.

Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey has publicly agreed with these opinionsóand recently, the brand issued a statement from Quincey in which he said: "The Coca-Cola Company does not support this legislation, as it makes it harder for people to vote, not easier."

That's reportedly why a group of commissioners in northern North Carolina's Surry County just voted 3-2 to ban all Coca-Cola machines from the county, according to local Winston-Salem TV news station WXII.

Poor conservatives are going to end up living in caves and dining on stone porridge if they keep up with this shit.

1. Remember when the Republicans would attack liberal cities for contemplating putting limits....

On the size of soft drinks as an anti-obesity measure (i.e. 64 oz big slurpies)?

I guess all that free market and personal responsibility schtick was all bullshit.

10. There's a big f***ing difference...

...between consumers deciding not to patronize companies whose policies they disagree with, and government deciding to make that decision for consumers in their jurisdiction, whether they like it or not. It's especially egregious when it comes from a party that claims to support the "freedom of choice" provided by laissez-faire capitalism.

I'm assuming that, if anyone decides to enforce this outrageous law, it will be challenged in the courts and promptly thrown out. Otherwise, what's to stop, say, local governments in major cities (most of which are overwhelmingly blue) to ban Murdoch and Sinclair from owning media outlets in those cities, and even forbid local cable companies and bookstores from carrying channels or papers from those entities?

might fall under the "law of un-intended consequences"........

A couple of years ago, Dicks Sporting Goods here in Colorado decided to not sell assault weapons ever again. Not only that, but they refused to sell their inventory to someone else, and had them all destroyed.

The right wing nut jobs made a big deal out of it, and called for a Boycott of Dicks.

LOL !!!!!!! Dicks Sporting Good Sales went up 20% !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And let me tell you, even though Pepsi is the "taste born in the Carolinas," I would crawl over scorpions to choose Coke over Pepsi!

Surry County is next to the county I grew up in, and so we spent a lot of time there. It is mainly rural with a few small towns, including Mount Airy and Pilot Mountain, which both kinda inspired Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show. They've also had a quite a few local Democrats who have held office in the last 20 years, so this seems weird to me. Of course, it was a close vote - but why did they single out Coke for being Woke (see what I did there)??

This, like most conservative nonsense, will probably backfire.

I would remind those who may not know this, but Pepsi was invented in North Carolina. People from NC are not going to be so worried about it from that perspective. Now, the fact that this childish display happened there as opposed to in Georgia just shows how weird these rethugs can be. Boycotting a business is one thing. Making everyone else adhere to your whining with no other cause than you don't like it is totalitarianism. Seeing yet another example of right wing hypocrisy is not surprising. Seeing it stay in place will be.

I believe this is protected speech from the CEO as it is not a commercial message.

This would be an interesting test of the 1st amendment, seeing as the local government is issuing decrees that punish an entity for issuing protected speech.

I now yield to any constitutional scholars who can further clarify...

66. Poor Coca-Cola...

This is a little funny. They have been attacked from the left, and the right, over the same issue. lol. Judging from the MAGAT reaction, they ended up on the right side of the issue, even if more slowly and less forcefully than some of us would have liked.

Somehow I think they will survive. The groceries in Surry county will still carry it...

69. Do i have this right?

The government of that county is limiting the free speech of Coca-Cola? There's no way that should hold up in court.

Beautiful county, very fond memories from the northwestern part of Surry County. Mt Airy is located there and the county is chock full of Trumper Repugs.....pity.....nice rural county
