Ganga Stone, visionary co-founder of God's Love We Deliver, dead at 78

Ganga Stone climbed aboard her bicycle in 1985 to launch a revolution of compassion.
The 79-year-old Stone, co-founder of the venerable God’s Love We Deliver charity during the AIDS epidemic, died Wednesday after watching her group’s efforts expand over the decades from a single meal delivered on a two-wheeler to a staggering 2.5 million meals now distributed annually to New York City’s homebound.
Stone’s bike was a necessity for the first delivery since the native New Yorker didn’t own a car, and she prepared the first meals 36 years ago with best friend Jane Best in their kitchens at home.
“She touched a lot of lives,” said Karen Pearl, the current CEO of God’s Love. “A lot of people are missing her already. So much of what Ganga put in place remains our foundation, which is pretty amazing: Food is love, act with urgency, no bureaucracy. If you’re sick and you can’t wait, we’re going to get you your meals.”
