JBS paid $11 million in ransom after cyberattack, company says

Source: ABC News

Meat supplier JBS, which was the victim of a ransomware attack over Memorial Day weekend, paid $11 million in bitcoins to the hackers that penetrated their system, the company announced Wednesday night.

"This was a very difficult decision to make for our company and for me personally," JBS USA CEO Andre Nogueira said in a statement. "However, we felt this decision had to be made to prevent any potential risk for our customers."

The company said it paid the ransom to "mitigate any unforeseen issues related to the attack and ensure no data was exfiltrated."

According to the Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, ransomware is a type of malware that shuts down a company's computer infrastructure with hackers demanding payment to unlock the system.

1. "Difficult Decision"?

A company that exists to slaughter animals shouldn’t whine. Of course they negotiate with terrorists, they are compadres.

3. CEO Andre Nogueira, you are a fantastic CEO -- not. For a fraction of that $11 million,

you could have put in place computer defenses against that attack. The ransom should come out of your paycheck.

4. Congrats JBS, you just outed yourself as a mark

for future extortion attempts.

5. They got a spare $11 M for hackers, but not anything to improve working conditions, humane ...

... conditions for cattle, or benefits for workers.

6. I've had experience with ransomware on my PC.

It scares the bejeezus out of you. You click something innocuous and the next thing, a new screen presents with a loud wailing siren, announcing you've been taken hostage.

I have a company that takes care of situations like this and they did. The money invested is better than paying a ransom.
