Trump DOJ seized communications data on Congressional Democrats in leak investigations
Source: Daily Beast
The Justice Department subpoenaed and seized data from Apple and another internet service provider on the communications of at least two Democratic members of Congress in 2017 and 2018, The New York Times reports.
The Democrats were both on the House Intelligence Committee, and one, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), was its chair; the other was not identified in the report.
Donald Trumps administration took the extraordinary step while investigating leaks of classified information and even went so far as to subpoena communications data on the family members of the two Democrats, including one minor, from the iPhone maker.
All in all, according to the Times, the DOJ under former Attorney General William Barr requisitioned data on a dozen people connected to the Democrats on the committee.

(21,526 posts)Not least, that Trump and Barr were using the DOJ's otherwise legitimate investigative powers to go on fishing expeditions against Democrats - hoping no doubt to find salacious or otherwise damaging material.

(21,526 posts)I suspect that if they keep pulling on this thread, this will make Watergate look like Jimmy Carter's rabid rabbit scandal.
Interestingly, Trump's pal Macri (down in Argentina) is now embroiled in a very similar scandal - as a steady drip-drip of evidence has emerged that he had the country "intelligence" agency spy on hundreds of public figures, friends and enemies alike.

You know what they say about friends and enemies...

(21,526 posts)Because in his business dealings, that's what he always did - every time he could, anyway.
Trump, as you know, was infamous in his New York days for resorting to espionage against business rivals - or simply anyone with whom he was doing big business - to get an edge in negotiations.
The real "art of the deal," as it were.

(9,903 posts)... if Barr will go to prison. Even without this, he should be locked up... along with Crooked Donald.

(21,526 posts)He's saved far too much Republican derrière from prison - and knows far too much - for them to just throw him under the bus.
Then again, knowing too much can be hazardous to health...

Garland might make some noises but in the end will determine nothing is technically illegal about anything he did, and that impeachment was the only recourse.
