GOP senators push for Hill veto power over a future U.S.-Iran deal

Source: Politico

A group of Republican senators introduced a bill on Friday that would require President Joe Biden to secure congressional approval for any new diplomatic agreement with Iran to curtail its nuclear program.

The bill, led by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), would give the Senate veto power over any attempt by the Biden administration to reenter the 2015 U.S.-Iran nuclear deal — which was effectively dissolved when former President Donald Trump withdrew from the pact in 2018 — by deeming it a treaty, which mandates approval from the upper chamber.

The GOP proposal comes as top Biden officials are holding indirect talks with the Iranians in Vienna in a bid to revive the Obama-era deal, which Republicans uniformly opposed. GOP lawmakers have introduced several measures aimed at preventing Biden from lifting the biting sanctions that Trump imposed on Tehran as part of his administration’s “maximum pressure” doctrine.

“Any potential agreement with Iran involves risks that affect our entire nation. It is critical to the security of America and to world peace that any deal Biden negotiates with Iran be deemed a treaty requiring approval by the U.S. Senate,” Johnson said.

4. Fucking idiots still don't understand that they don't get to call the shots any more.

It doesn't matter how much they pout, whine and try to bully others to get their way.

Elections have consequences, assholes. Deal with it.

7. Isn't a treaty a preferrable outcome over an agreement?

A treaty would make it more difficult for future president/majorities to undo, correct?

14. Right, but...

good luck passing a treaty with this Senate. And when Obama negotiated the first deal, Republicans held the Senate.

12. Typical

This seems to be the mo for the Republicans if you can't win the leadership positions i.e. governor, secretary of state or president they do what they can to move the power to whatever position or body they control. They are not interested in democracy or the will of the people only their power and what they want for the wealthy donors.

13. Short answer

No.

Ever since they got their asses kicked in 2018 and 2020 they have been trying to get away
with everything possible. Fuck 'em. The President, his Sec. of State, and his people get to
call the shots on this. It is in the Constitution. BTW the deal that John Kerry and Ernie Moniz
got done was perfect it was so good after Trump pulled out of it he demanded that Iran follow
that deal/

15. Constitution states Bidens need 2/3s of Senate to go along with a treaty

If this would fall under Treaty...

...The Treaty Clause empowers the President to make or enter into treaties ONLY with the "advice and consent" of at least two-thirds of the Senate.

17. On the other hand, he can blow off the treaty on a whim, like Dubya did in 2001

when he withdrew the U.S. from the landmark 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty with the USSR. No reason was given (Bush issued a statement in which he noted that the treaty is “now behind us,”) and the action didn't require Senate approval.

16. Perhaps a treaty is best

Of course, we can’t deal directly one-on-one with Iran because of our pride. So let us say an agreement is reached. Doubtful it would pass the senate. They would simply filibuster and Manchin and/or Sinema would vote with the Republicans.

As for a threat to world peace? The Republican Party is a bigger threat to world peace.
