A naturalized U.S. citizen from Mexico is suing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying the agency held him in detention for a week even though he had his passport with him and repeatedly insisted he was an American.
The Northwest Immigrant Rights Project filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court on behalf of Everett resident Carlos Rios, identified as a native of Mexicali, Mexico, who has been in the U.S. since the 1980s and became a citizen in 2000.
I cannot understand why I was detained and why no one listened to me, Rios said in a news release issued by the immigrant rights group. I had my U.S. passport with me when I was detained, and I told this to the immigration officers many times. I hope that this lawsuit can make a difference to ensure that others are not subjected to such terrible, unlawful treatment by U.S. immigration officials.
The lawsuit says Rios was pulled over on his motorcycle in Pierce County in November 2019 on suspicion of driving under the influence. When he was released from jail the next day, two ICE officers were waiting for him.

(405 posts)He was arrested after being released from a minor pot charge. The client was Puerto Rican, but had a similar name as some guy wanted on an immigration charge. His wife showed up with his paper work and was threatened arrest for bringing in forged documents. After a few days his discharge papers from the Marine Corps got him released.

(45,442 posts)The dirty secret that no one wants to mention in the "Americans are too rich from stimulus checks to work in restaurants" meme, is that a lot of undocumented and documented immigrants work in restaurants. And a lot of brown Latinos who look like immigrants but were born here also work in restaurants. And ICE loves raiding these workplaces because they are easy pickings. They don't give a shit if they pick up legal immigrants and US citizens as long as they catch a few undocumented too.

(54,378 posts)Any ICE officer refusing to immediately release a detainee with legitimate proof of citizenship gets fired and a non-suspendable year in a federal prison. That should cut down on abuse considerably.
Works for me completely.

(2,355 posts)ICE is staffed with a bunch of racist MAGAts, looking to vent frustrations on brown people. I could be wrong, but thats the impression Im getting from zero tolerance, and mass incarcerations at the border from the interregnum years.
