Jedeed yelled at the man to stop touching her. A crowd formed around her and another journalist, with unmasked men screaming at them from all directions. Jedeed kept her camera rolling, and when she got away from the crowd, she uploaded video of the incident to YouTube and Twitter, and it went viral.
Reaction was swift.
The man in the flag mask was quickly identified as Washington state resident Edward Jeremy Dawson by a local antifa group. Twitter users mining public records later released his address and phone number.

Doxxing isnt cool but still,
That lady needs to realize her hubby is one bad dude and accept that his actions were the cause of his firing.

(1,668 posts)But so much of the behavior we see is predicated on anonymity that making it fully public may be the only solution now. Shaming is not positive civil behavior, and yet witnessing shameful acts by anonymous actors has had two effects: it has emboldened the shameless, and convinced the rest of us that those groups act with the tacit approval law enforcement.
Another point to ponder is the rural/urban divide. Urban dwellers have had a great deal of anonymity for centuries, when internal checks on behavior break down in urban dwellers violence and chaos escalate quickly. In more rural communities the level of anonymity was always lower and acted as an external check on behavior. The fluid ability to move from rural to urban environs (economically and physically) may have left people who have always relied on external behavior checks without adequate internal restraints to operate in an urban setting.

(2,146 posts)then I would call that doxxing. But it's not. It's all out there for anyone to find and repeat. This is the modern world - act as if a camera is on you all the time. These idiots think they can be anonymous and get away with intimidation - they are doing exactly what the Klan did. But now they can be exposed within minutes. And they should be. Too bad they didn't think of the consequences of their actions, but that is 100% on them. And oh how they whine when the consequences fall on their heads..

(35,652 posts)While she says she's intimidated, in fact she has perfect control over her voice, so I don't think she really is intimidated. I think she used it as a point to highlight what cowards they are, ganging up on a woman.
I couldn't watch the whole thing, though. I watched all but the last 7". Let me tell you, that would be my idea of hell: having a crowd of bad breath surrounding me. Ugh, they have to be all Incels because they are so repulsive.
Major maturity problem with these characters.

(2,146 posts)They think they are in some sort of movie or video game where they are the heroes and there is no slapback for there actions. No, really - I talked with one and they don't seem to think beyond the moment, and they are all lost up in their heads.

Two days later, Dawson lost his job as an ironworker, his employer citing his actions in D.C. His wife, Michelle, uploaded a tearful self-shot video to Twitter announcing his firing, and later that month she was asked to hand in her vest and badge at a Walmart in Battle Ground, Wash., where she worked as an online-order fulfiller.

(35,652 posts)Another point the article makes is about the backgrounds of the Dawsons (Dawson is the m guy with the gaitor getting in Laura's face).
Michelle Dawson won a seat on the city council in Yacolt running on gun rights. From Utah, she's a h.s. dropout. Never had interest in politics until Trump. Voted for the first time in 2020.
He has a similarly distinguished background, having dropped out of h.s. in the 11th grade.; got a job as an ironworker. Abused drugs and alcohol and became addicted to crystal meth. Arrested, six years in state prison.

And that's just first 30 secs of searching.
How does WaPo survive by me ignoring it, when if they let me access an article I leave a footprint that WaPo can go to their advertisers and say look at my traffic count! Or they could allow three or four free articles, or they could 'sell' me an issue or even an article.

NJCher
(35,652 posts)is doxing.
There is interesting information about how activists are conducting classes in public records research and social media research to expose who these people are.

(25,927 posts)I just wondered if new information had come to light. Im glad there are tools available for identifying these criminals. They must not be allowed to hide in anonymity.
NJCher
(35,652 posts)I was pleased to see a part-time college librarian was conducting such classes. It is gratifying to know we are putting such tools to work. Public records are generally free but you do have to know how to use them.
The article states "death threats" but that's not really the style of the left. It also points out doxxing is done by the right.

(36,022 posts)Indeed, some on the left, including Jedeed, who is a well-known activist in Portland, Ore., have qualms about the tactic and how effective it can be in the fight against extremism.
From a practical perspective, I feel like being unemployable is going to push him in a more extreme direction, Jedeed said. On the other hand, you shouldn't be able to act like that and then have nothing happen to you.
The tactic also has been employed by the far right to target not just their leftist opponents but also the families of mass shooting victims, who have been harassed by those claiming the attacks were fabricated.
Antifa activists say that hateful rhetoric is protected by the First Amendment but that that doesnt mean those who advocate or use violence as part of their ideology shouldnt be exposed, including to their employers. They argue that doxing is a nonviolent response to violence.
