NYC mayor's race: Curtis Sliwa wins Republican nomination

NEW YORK — Mayoral contender Curtis Sliwa won the Republican primary on Tuesday in the race to replace Bill de Blasio.

Sliwa beat businessman Fernando Mateo. He’ll face off against the winner of the Democratic Primary and any additional third-party candidates in the general election on Nov. 2.

For years, Sliwa has been known as head of the Guardian Angels, an anti-crime group. He’s said he’ll bring back stop and frisk and a plainclothes anti-crime unit, which was disbanded in June of 2020. Sliwa’s also called for greater police presence on subways and buses.

Sliwa credited his supporters in a victory speech, especially the Staten Island Republican Party, who endorsed him early on in the primary. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani stood at Sliwa’s side for the speech, whom Sliwa also thanked. Giuliani at times received raucous applause from the crowd.

Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa has admitted that he is a publicity addict who faked his own kidnapping and several stunts that grabbed headlines for his volunteer crime-fighting organization in its early years.

Sliwa, 38, told the New York Post he decided to tell the truth about the half-dozen times he cried wolf because of his recent real brush with death -- he was ambushed and shot in a cab -- and the outpouring of affection he received while recuperating.

The Post reported today that Sliwa admitted fabricating rescues of crime victims, an incident of racist vandalism and, finally, his own kidnapping. He said his last hoax was in 1980.

NYC has 3.7 million registered Democrats and a little over 500,000 Republicans. The Democratic primary is effectively the election.

Republicans aren't competitive here (or in other big cities) at all like they used to be 15-20 years ago.

18. There was a 'Law & Order' episode called 'Cry Wolf' based on Sliwa. He tried to sue the show. LOL.

NEW YORK, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Curtis Sliwa said he may sue "Law & Order" producers because a character on the NBC series resembled the Guardian Angels founder and New York radio host.

Sliwa blasted the episode Thursday, saying the portrayal of the Sliwa-like character as a hypocritical, philandering, self-righteous, publicity-seeking phony infuriated him, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

"As Seinfeld used to say, I was 'bizarro'd.' This was a world where everything up was down. My character was so despicable that he deserved to get shot," Sliwa told the Daily News.

Sliwa also criticized the episode Thursday on his WABC radio show.

"The whole show was a massive disinformation effort by ("Law & Order" executive producer) Dick Wolf," said Sliwa, adding he will consult "a phalanx of legal beagles and see what's possible. This is a very popular show. It could follow me for a long time."

The "Law & Order" episode used Sliwa's 1992 shooting, allegedly on the orders of mob heir John A. (Junior) Gotti, as its opening.

By the end of the show, the Sliwa character refused to nail his assailants in exchange for a satellite radio show.

Video from 2018 surfaced this week of Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate for mayor of New York City, describing Orthodox Jews as a drag on the tax system.

“We’re not talking about poor, impoverished, disabled people who need help, we’re talking about able-bodied men who study Torah and Talmud all day and we subsidize them,” Sliwa says in the video. “And then all they do is make babies like there’s no tomorrow and who’s subsidizing that? We are.

“So are we the shmucks and putzes? Yes.”

Sliwa’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The video, which shows the founder of the Guardian Angels speaking at a meeting for the Reform Party, was posted originally to a Facebook page called United Hudson Valley on Oct. 25, 2018.
