Trump lawyer: Manhattan DA won't charge former president
Source: Politico
Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance has indicated he does not currently plan to charge the Trump Organization with crimes related to allegations of "hush money" payments and real estate value manipulations, according to a personal lawyer for Donald Trump.
Ronald Fischetti, a New York attorney who represents the former president, said on Monday that in a meeting last week, he asked Vances team for details on charges they were considering.
According to Fischetti, members of Vances team said they were considering bringing charges against the Trump Organization and its individual employees related to alleged failures to pay taxes on corporate benefits and perks. It has been widely reported that those perks included cars and apartments and appear to only involve a small number of executives.
We asked, Is there anything else? Fischetti told POLITICO. They said, No.
Its crazy that thats all they had, he added.

(15,321 posts)I'm sure the stories about "is in jeopardy of" and "could result in charges" and "called to testify" generate a lot of revenue-generating clicks as well as good fodder for fundraising emails. But the fact is that all of these people are rich and, thus, untouchable. Anything that claims otherwise is just a tired retread of the infamous "fitzmas."

(14,689 posts)"our investigation is ongoing"
Because we want to believe that the rich and powerful and criminal will pay for their crimes. Especially Donald Trump.
That he can throw out a line like that so that some will say..."See? the REAL charges are still coming!"
No. Until that fat sob dies from eating one too many cheeseburgers, he will live a life of opulence and privilege, tweeting from his golden toilet.
The best we can do is try and make sure his legacy is accurately put down. Because there will be many who will try and rewrite history for him, they already are with the Jan 6th insurrection details. By this time next year, it will be common knowledge with half of America that it was just a group of tourists who got a little rowdy. And the FBI stirred them up to make it worse. ANTIFA!!! etc..
I'm soooooooo tired of reading posts like "Bush is going down!" "Cheney will be charged!", "KKKarl Rove is toast!"........and all the Republicans since. We have to get over celebrating early. If it happens, Trump is indicted, and charged, and sentenced to a prison time, I will celebrate then. A lot.

Despite the previous doom and gloom comments, I read this as we can expect charges relating to tax fraud/failure to pay taxes.

Well, there you have it. Vance will let Trump walk away from bank fraud, insurance fraud, and tax fraud. Trump will then proclaim that he was exonerated of all wrongdoing.
I have a friend -- he died about five years ago -- who was involved in some illegal dealings in Louisiana (imagine that!!) and spent two years in a minimum security prison in Carville, LA. He once told me: "It's a lot cheaper to buy a judge than to pay a lawyer."
When you have money -- gobs and gobs of money -- no one will touch you.
So -- Trump walks, Vance goes on to write a book about how he dropped the hammer on Trump and the rest of us will continue to struggle.

Yet Politico, which was the original source of the false information, still has yet to change its false headline.

(43,165 posts)Prosecutors did not inform the defense lawyers what they were going to do after the meting.
Trump lawyers pointed out there would be harm to the business.
Two guests.
CH (Chris Hayes) asks if such a meeting is uncommon. He is told by Danya Perry, former fed pros, that it is not uncommon.
Rare that it works (prosecutors being persuaded not to proceed), but if it did you would not hear about the case (not possible in this situation). A case involving Karl Rove was her example.
Dave (other guest) Fahrenthold, reporter at Wash. Post, is asked how big a problem the "hurting Joe Blow" point is. He points out liquor licenses are a problem, but that would only be after conviction.
CH asks how Danya would think through the decision. She responds with the following criteria:
a) collateral consequences (hurts Joe Blow)
b) pervasiveness of the conduct
c) how long it's been going on
These issues, she notes, do not count in favor of the trump organization.
Dave says Weisselberg is the person to watch this week.

Sounds to me like they think it's Weisselberg first, then maybe Trump.

(3,835 posts)If you buy a house and take out a mortgage of, say, $300,00, then, you owe the bank $300,000. The bank owns you.
If you owe the bank $300,000,000, then, you own the bank. There is no way that any bank can survive the default of a $300,000,000 loan.
That's the way it works for the super-rich.
Trump has a lot of property, all of which is mortgaged to the hilt. He owes around $1,000,000,000 -- that's ONE BILLION DOLLARS -- in loans on his property. While he does not owe this to one bank, the banks to which he is in debt cannot survive a default.
Thus, if the Trump organization is found guilty of whatever, it's a dream that the banks will abandon him and call in his loans. Instead, the banks to which he is in debt will sit with Trump, his accountants and lawyers, and they will work out a deal:
-- Trump retains title to the property
-- The bank takes a portion of the annual cash flow as payment on the loan
-- Trump keeps the rest of the annual cash flow for his personal use.
-- And he goes on with his rallies and his lifestyle.
His children -- Don Jr., Eric, Ivanka -- and his son-in-law Kushner -- will go on with their lives without a single bump in the road except for a few annoying depositions. Daughter Tiffany -- now a student at GWU Law School - was fortunate in that when her mother, Marla Maples, divorced Trump, she took Tiffany with her. As a result, Tiffany is not poisoned with the Trump brand.
And that, folks, is "justice" at work.
