Buttigieg doles out transport grants with eye toward climate
Source: AP Associated Press
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg doled out $905 million in infrastructure grants Wednesday, including to repair a cracking bridge in Seattle during a crippling heat wave and to expand ports in Iowa and Georgia to help reduce the number of greenhouse gas-emitting trucks on the roads.
The money for 24 projects in 18 states is part of a Biden administration shift of federal awards to promote climate-friendly policies and racial equity.
Federal aid will also go to California to reduce traffic fatalities in south Los Angeles and to Maine for bridge repair.
These timely investments in our infrastructure will create jobs and support regional economies, while helping to spur innovation, confront climate change, and address inequities across the country, Buttigieg said.
The money awarded Wednesday under the departments Infrastructure for Rebuilding America program offers a glimpse into how the administration hopes to steer federal transportation dollars in the months ahead.

AP had this listed in their political news, I thought that was odd.

(78,256 posts)I sure hope he gives Memphis money to resurface roads.
I'd read some months ago, gov Lee received $25 mill for roads. Designated 1mill for Memphis, the most populous region.
Tired of roads breaking parts on my car, as is everyone.
Ty for posting!

(135 posts)Some of the major, and not so major, roads here in Shelby County need more than a resurfacing. They need to be taken up, have the underlayment rebuilt and then repaved. When you have patches on the patches on the patches on the potholes that means the road needs to be taken down to bare dirt and rebuilt, literally from the ground up.

No knowledge of road building. Ty for sharing!
When they "repair" roads, they do not make any attempt to smoothe the surface. Never rolled.
And I'm convinced of 2 things:
1. They need lessons in how to correctly pave expansion joints (so cars don't hit, or fall off 4" brackets; &
2. There must be a rule that if any asphalt is left in the truck, workers must patch another pothole, because globs of bumpy paving material are everywhere.
Makes me wonder whether the workers din't drive on the same roads as the rest of us.

(3,445 posts)Maybe I'm being paranoid, but doesn't the word "doled" as in "doled out" have a negative connotation? Why use that word in the article?
Another one that gets me - they always refer to tax increases as a "tax hike." Irritates me to no end!

(13,538 posts)That area is "chicken country" & about 70 miles from ATL, so it seems like an odd place to do that. But i'm no logistics expert, so it'll be interesting to find out whats behind the decision.
